Subject: Its St. Johns--Not St. John's

Did anyone else notice the glaring signage error on the new store? The owners mistakenly added an apostrophe....Someone should tell them.

no, i think they just included the apostrophe that the street sign omitted.

"Johns" on the street sign either means that there are several saints named John for which the street is named after, or it is a possessive noun without the apostrophe meaning the street belonging to Saint John.

It is standard practice in the US to omit apostrophes in place names.

I can't help myself -- the first word of the title of this thread should be "It's," not "Its."

I believe it is standard practice to omit apostrophes in NY street signs. That does not mean that the apostrophe doesn't belong there.

Now *here* is some apostrophe abuse - http://irsosmart.blogspot.com/

For what it's worth, there's no period after the St in St Johns Pl either.

See this thread from 3 years ago:

BUT- on some of the NYC buildings websites and whatnot, I have noticed that you have to look it up as SAINT instead of ST. For what it is worth.

Also FWIW, the official USPS standardization is "SAINT JOHNS PL".

I've seen so many real misspellings/typos on canopies etc. in this city, it's not funny. My favorite is one on Broadway in Long Island City/Astoria (nobody's quite sure of the boundaries there either - including the USPS). This Indian restaurant has "Mughal Diner" painted on the window and printed on their menus, and "Mughal Dinner" on its canopy. I've seen lots of errors on printed menus too. I also make my fair share of typos and spelling/grammatical errors, so I try not to get too serious about them.
