What was the name of the DUMBO area 10 years ago?

Obviously the named DUMBO was created just a few years ago by Real Estate agents when the area first started becoming gentrified. But what was the area called before then? As far as I can remember, it was just an area of warehouses and docs that pretty much didn't have a name.

I remember my father calling it DUMBO when I was in HS and that was the early 1990's. So it has been DUMBO for almost 20 years by my watch.
