The exhibit "The Ministrel SHow 2008" will close abruptly after this afternoon's opening at 755 Dean. It has been deemed too powerful for a family venue and to quote the owner, "Belongs in a gallery." Always easier said than done in this closed, incestuous art world. Do try to see it why it is up.Which is until 6:00 SUnday. However, before 4 some is covered in a sheet... It is pretty terific even its infuriating aspects. PJK

P.s. Pity, thanks for your oh so clever reply to my previous post.

Even after 4:00 most of the works were covered in sheets. WTF? I understand if the owner believed them to be controversial, but to forbid people who came to see them to see them was silly.

had the owner seen the work before it was hung? if not, i could sympathize with fearing alienating paying customers.

This is from the artist's website:

" My recent body of work attempts to show the ugly truth about most mainstream Hip Hop culture. When one examines the programming of BET and/or MTV, or listens carefully to any Hip Hop radio station, it’s clear that the minstrel shows from the 1830s are alive and well. The black make-up, red mouths, and banjoes have all been replaced with over size jewelry, drugs, women, material things and rapping.

The “New Black Face” series of paintings and drawings are informed by an interview between Rhymefest and DJ Winta, in which Rhymefest stated that grillz “…are the new black face”. The series is also informed by Byron Hurt’s film “Hip Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes.”
