coffee shop next to buttermilk?

The long empty 99 cent store that is next to buttermilk is being renovated currently. The work permits show "renovate existing storefront into coffee shop"

Given the size of this space, it is going to be a huge place. Any inside info on what it is?

Could it be a new Tea Lounge? I pray it isn't a starbucks.

There is a sign up on the space now, "High Point Coffee". They also had signs up saying they were interviewing for all positions. The space they have is pretty huge, I hope their rent is cheap and they can stay open.

starbucks is the worst coffee ever. i dont care about them being an evil corporate chain or that nonsense. their stuff tastes bad.

I walked past this place this morning. The sign is huge and weirdly nondescript-looking, and I'm having a real tough time envisioning how this is going to be a coffee shop. That stretch of 5th is shaping up to be a real weird spot, what with the weird slanty-windowed building across the street and half-completed construction projects everywhere.. I feel like in five years it'll all be some sort of low-rent post-apocalyptic dystopian relic of the Brooklyn building boom.

(Oh - and I almost forgot - the sign says they're going to have free wifi at the coffee shop!)

the space is definitely weird. It looks like they kept most of the old lighting from the 99 cent store so the entire space is filled with florescent lights. Not very warm and inviting from initial impressions.

Actually, that was Stavenhagen Pawn Shop check cashing. They also
sold musical instruments, cartridges for your turntables, used household items. It was a great place for buying all things related to music. As a pawn shop, I can't say but they had a large selection of vintage rings and
stuff. They also sold old silver coins. The people were nice. It was there
for time out of mind - I remember it being there as far back as the 60's
and even then, it looked old. It's really a very large space for coffee and
it looks as if they are up and running now. I hope the coffee is good.
Plenty of room to bring in a stroller no doubt!

Wow, really bright inside this joint. I just walked by and it is empty. If one were going to brave going inside, one should certainly have on a good pair of sunglasses and I think a visor would be in order as well. There were two workers just standing about looking outside. This is really a
great space -- I hope they catch on to the lighting situation and perhaps
lure in some coffee customers. I love a good cup of coffee, I've spoiled
myself as I perk my own and most of the stuff outside hits me like bland
water! Time will tell for sure.

Just walked by (10:15am, saturday morning) and it was completely empty. Not too good for a saturday morning. There were two employees standing behind the counter looking pretty bored.

I thought about going in, but it was just so bright.

Amazing how the lighting can have such an impact. I'm sure they are
clueless to the situation. Perhaps a gentle nudge? It's true, there doesn't
seem to be anything at all inviting about the place. I'm sure the two
employees can't help looking bored after all, there isn't a rush of customers. They could even just dim the lights on one side of the place
and leave the other side lightening bright if they desire. At least then there
would be a choice. Bad flourescent lighting is the worst. It bounces off
your pages, your laptop, just annoying in general. oooooooooh brite lite
brite lite.

Yikes. I walked by there today. Bright and not very welcoming. It's a huge space, yet it doesn't seem to do anything to make you want to come in and sit there.

I saw it open and went in. It looks no that cozy (light is too bright, no sofa) though it was spacious, and people were nice. Coffee $1.40 or so, cookie $ 85, a box of tea $8.00. I did not feel like staying in, it may survive if they find enough people stop by, what do you guys think?

ok, i really want to like this place, but it hard.

I stopped by this morning and just wanted a quick cup of coffee for my walk to the train. 1.65 later I ended up with a luke warm bland coffee. The luke warm temperature I can chalk up to the fact that they don't have any business. Given that there are no customers in there they just have coffee sitting around. Even in the thermal carafes, it goes cold eventually.

Second, the coffee was just bland. Bland, bland, bland. Granted, I say starbucks is charred and overr oasted, but surely there is a happy middle ground.

They would be much better off doing individual drip coffees to order at the volume they are doing. It would be much better.

Unfortunately I predict High Point will be gone in 2 months at this rate.

*sigh* So much for 2 months. I guess they are done. There is a moving truck outside and they are removing all the fixtures and tables.

I went there once. I appreciated the fact that they were open super late.

Wow. That was indeed fast. I went in there once and was taken aback by the weird decor (a cross between Hope Depot cheap and chain restaurant bland), the bright lighting, and the overall strange vibe. It looked and felt like a chain establishment in a weird alternate-universe America. Almost as if it was a Canadian chain.

I think you're being mean to Canadians.
