Deli Sandwich Help

I am heading off to the Jets game on Sunday and I need to pick up a couple of good deli meat sandwiches for the game. My go-to place, A&S Pork Store, is shut down until they move into their new spot. Where should I go to get my over-stuffed delicious deli meat sandwich?

I heard that place on the corner of 9th st. and 5th (catene, maybe?) does a mean hero...

5th Ave Market at Berkeley has a excellent sandwich, The Godfather 1 and Godfather 2. Both come with lots of italian meats (prosciutto, cappy etc) fresh motz or provalone, pepers... oil and vinegar.....

I want one NOW!

You mean you have never gone to Pollio? That is the place to go to for a big hero, hubby gets them all the time for football games. he loves their italian hero or sometimes he gets what used to be called an 'american", roast beef, muenster cheese, cole slaw and russian dressing. or, anything else you like-great sandwiches! They are at 5th avenue between 5th & 6th Streets.

i can't believe no one here mentioned Bierkraft. For shame. $8 gets you some of the best damn sandwiches you'll ever have in your life. No one has meats and cheeses of their caliber to put in a sandwich.

Espositos pork store on court st and president, and Piasano brothers on Smith by Wyckoff are both pretty amazing.

Pollio on 5th! Get the Peter Luger sandwich with sauce on the side so it doesn't turn your sandwich into a mushy mess.

Also, the salami sandwich at Peppinos (on 5th Ave and 10th) holds up really well (salami, mozz, basil, peppers). I usually eat half of one after a night of drinking and it's still good to go the next morning.

I've never had a sandwich from Brooklyn Bread (5th Ave and 6th) but their oven baked baguettes are pretty freakin good and would hold up strong with whatever is on it.

I second Catene. Excellent roast beef.

I like to stop at terrace Bagels for road food, not just for bagels, any kind of sandwich

Went with the Pollio suggestions. I had the #1 Italian special but substituted hot peppers for the roasted pepper. My buddy had prosciutto and fresh mozzarella. Both sandwiches were fantastic. I might never go back to A&S. (ok - maybe not, but they were good sandwiches.) Thanks for the tip. Next time I'll try the Peter Luger Pastoralia.

True...City Subs is the best. But, man those lines can go out the door. It's almost diFara-esque.

FWIW: More peeps have to check out Pollio. The owners are so great and I'm worried they are gonna get hurt when A&S opens three blocks away and then they will have to close up shop. Didn't they used to have a store on 7th about five years ago?

Yeah-the store on 7th Ave was probably longer than 5 years ago at this point. Again, I don't see how A&S is really going to hurt them-won't A&S still basically be a butcher shop that does sandwiches?

And, I love Mathew (the owner), he is such a nice guy.

Despite the unappetizing name, Pollio makes some incredible sandwiches, and the guys who work there could not be nicer.

I know right? the name is weird, I always thought it was pronounced the same way you pronounce the cheese, but, that is not how they do it.

BTW, they make an amazing pepper steak!

I am a loyal A&S customer and I am looking forward to their new store, but I will now get my sandwiches at Pollio. They are simply fantastic.

Pollio's meatballs and lasagna are pretty damn good too.

I've never had a sandwich from A&S. I don't know why...I guess Pollio was always my go-to spot for Italian. Russo's for pasta, however.

I hope A&S expands to carry more butcher shop options (oxtails, goat, pig-heads, etc. al a Los Paisanos on Smith Street) They will certainly have the space- that old Karate studio is huge and they will be the Slope's only full-service butcher shop.

I'm gonna have to give that pepper-steak a try. I always see it and it looks like what mom used to make.

Oh man...wishing i hadn't read this. I am starving and home-bound due to an injury. Any of these places deliver? Or even open at night? I guess I could send hubby when he gets home tomorroww, but that still leaves me screwed for food tonight. Damn.

does anyone know what pollio's store hours are? i tried to get a sub after the gym but it was closed and it was only ~8:50pm

Yeah, I think they close around 7 or 7:30pm
