Galada bodega on St Johns/Washington

Is this place closing down? The inventory is slowly dwindling away.

is that the bodega on the south-west corner? -- if so, they start renovations tomorrow and will be sort of closed for a bit. however, they said maybe the plexi-glass walk up window might be open. 8)

I wonder what changes there will be. That's my favorite bodega, so I am excited for newness.

That's really good - I like that place as well. I worry about the bodegas, they gotta change with the neighborhood or else they are history.

I don't know about that. Most neighborhoods in New York City have plenty of bodegas.

True, but given the theoretical "gentrification" of the neighborhood ... it's ripe for alternative markets. My sense is that if there are, say 10 bodegas on Washington now, only a small percentage will be here 2, 3 or 5 years from now.

The winnowing has begun - there used to be three bodegas at the St Johns/Washington intersection. But if you look at any block and realize how many people are on that block, and then how often they need to go grab milk or cigarettes or whatever, I'll bet you'll find that each block could support 1 bodega on its own. If I need something quick, I would never go to an alternative market.

the bodega on the corner of St John's and underhill now carries soy milk and organic eggs.
im not sure exactly what that means but they never had that stuff before this year.

There was a segment on the news about a program to bring more healthy foods to bodegas. I didn't actually see the segment, just the teaser before the commercial break. Maybe this is a part of it? Or maybe there have been requests by regulars? I understand that Met will listen to requests for new/different products. I wouldn't be surprised if a bodega, with (I'm assuming) a smaller company structure would be even more nimble with changes.

i was in galed bodega yesterday, and was told they were renovating, when i asked why the huge shelf in the middle of the store was gone...

has anyone been in this bodega since they reopened? they have standard bodega stuff, though I think they don't have beer anymore. but they also now have soy milk and some other higher end grocery products. it looks nice.

its very nice in there! and surprisingly. their prices arent any higher than they were before the renovation.

saal says theyll have beer in stock again as soon as they resubmit their liquor license thing, which should happen in a matter of a week or two.

im glad theyre back. theyre my fav 24 hour place.

so I just obtained one of their turkey and cheese sandwiches - SO GOOD. mmm.
