"Keshavarz says she showed up to P.S. 230 near her home in Kensington at about six this morning and was unable cast her vote because poll workers told her 'they didn’t have the voter lists, the machine was broken, and there was no one there to man the table.'”

    I worked the polls a few years back. Was unemployed for a couple of weeks, and thought it would be entertaining. Let me just say, it is a minor miracle that our elections run as well as they do, given the crazies that work the polls, the 800-year-old equipment and the total lack of math abilities the collective polling place staff had.

    In Australia, we still vote using low tech paper and pencils, with a printed list of the electoral roll (which closes 30 days prior to the election). It is not perfect, but at least it works. And we have 95% turnout due to the fact that it is mandatory to attend a polling place on polling day, get your name marked off and accept voting materials from an electoral official - you are not obliged, however, to cast a valid vote (although the vast majority do).

    it's a amazing what a flustercuck the voting process seems to be in this county. this isn't rocket science, and yet.... a thousand different half-assed procedures in different places... nothing definitive or clear or failsafe.

    local laws and customs is good and fine, but when national elections roll around, local customs should be subordinate to national policies and procedures.

    never understood the requirement to register, and the idea that you should indicate your party when you register is crazy. any citizen who walks up to a polling station should be able to cast a vote. i know there are complicating factors, but again - not rocket science, and not anything new - there must be ways to do this better.

    just voted at IS 88 at 544 7 Avenue. Please be aware that the 16th district machine is "broken" and people had to do paper ballot (stuffing in a cardboard box with a slit)..that's just GREAT. the woman manning that desk was of no help when asked how to fill out the ballot to a person infront of me. they didn't even tell people waiting in that line "hey, by the way the machine is broken so get ready to fill out paperwork." i really wanted to punch her.
