Just awoke at 6am to the sound of police helicopters and sirens. Wtf? Did things get out of hand last night?

The crowds in front of Soda were cheering everything, from police cars, to delivery trucks, to garbage trucks.

The only thing the cops were upset about were people drinking in the street, so it took a herculean effort by the fine employees of Soda to bring people inside.

It was a great night for America, and a great night for Vanderbilt Avenue.

I thought the celebrations were relatively well-contained, at least in the early minutes after the announcement. I just missed it, thus was walking home from the 7th ave stop and there was nothing but silence. Minutes after I walked in my door I saw the subdued "Obama Elected" graphic on TV with no narration, meaning it had obviously already been said...yet I'd heard nothing while walking home...weird. I assume it got rowdier later in the evening?

Not sure how it was on other networks, but on NBC the "subdued graphic" in silence was actually the first announcement that he won. We thought it was kind of weird way to present it, but the announcers came on shortly thereafter and confirmed that he had won. The bulk of the cheering/screaming started shortly thereafter. Then the fireworks (I really want to believe they were fireworks, not gunshots).

AH! I was watching NBC too. Then that explains why there were no sounds on the street--I made it home just in time!
