Quest for the ULTIMATE Veggie Burger!

Brooklyn is a beautiful and expansive place full of wonderful people, music, and culture. Increasingly Brooklyn has start to become recognized for the variety of fantastic culinary delights it offers.

Notable among Brooklyn's many restaurants is how they have embraced vegetarians and vegans. There are numerous vegetarian restaurants and even non-vegetarian restaurants which have many vegetarian selections on the menu (not just the cursory salad or pasta dish).

Given such an atmosphere, I am disheartened by the lack of one dish in particular -- the Veggie Burger.

I have had a veggie burger at over a dozen different establishments here in Park Slope, and every single one of them disappointed.

When I say veggie burger, I don't mean a mish mash of broccoli, peas, potatoes and who knows what else put between two pieces of bread with condiments. This is the kind of veggie burger most commonly found at diners. It's gross and basically insulting in its thought that vegetarians are some kind of garbage disposal for vegetables who care little about taste.

The one veggie burger I have enjoyed has been at Johnny Rocket's (they use a boca patty). Even though they do not make the patty themselves, they grill it perfectly, and the lettuce, tomatoes, and onions they use are fresh and delicious. I hate to have to be in midtown to enjoy this.

Recently in Park Slope Atomic Wings opened and I was disappointed by their veggie burger. I understand its a wings place but don't put a veggie burger on the menu if it isn't good. My carnivore friends have said their wings are great, however.

So now I ask for you, the message board saavy denizens of Park Slope to join me on a quest for the ultimate veggie burger. Tell me where you had a good veggie burger in the slope, what was good about it, and other details like does the restaurant deliver. Also tell us where you had a bad veggie burger (Burger Bar's sucked) so we veggie burger enthusiasts know to avoid it.

Thank you for your time

OK, I don't get them very often, but I did get one at the new Burger Bar a couple weeks ago and it was tasty!

I'll give Ital Shak a shot if I'm ever in that part of town, thank you.

scarlett, are you referring to Flipster's? I haven't tried their veggie burger since they took over Burger Bar so I will try your suggestion as well

Thank you for your quick and helpful responses! May the quest continue

I had the misfortune of accidentally patronizing Goodburger (home of the goodburger, can I take yer order pleeze) with the children once. Their veggie burger was fucking nasty. Did. Not. Like. Even my veggie child turned his nose up.

I really liked the veggie burger at Bonnie's...I recommend it topped with jalapenos, extra pickles, and a side of the veggie chili. Not for the squeamish veg, though - I assume there is meat/veg commingling on the grill.

    sheep station.

not your typical burger, but v. tasty, what with the beet and grilled onions and the surpisingly delicious pineapple...it's the fried egg that really makes the pineapple work, i think.

Aside from Daisy's Diner I don't think I've ever had a veggie burger in the slope. It was pretty decent from what I remember (3am or so after a night at Buttermilk). One of my favorites in Brooklyn though is the Taco Veggie Burger at Jimmy's Diner on Union in Williamsburg. That paired up with the sweet potato fries is just a plate of glory. I think I needs me some of that this weekend.

Bonnie's veggie burger is disgusting. As has been discussed here previously, their char-cooking method that apparently works well for their meat burgers leaves the veggie burgers tasting super chemically. Horrid... the worst veggie burger I have EVER eaten.

My vote: Park Slope Ale House on 6th Ave. Fantastic veggie burger and fries. Yummmm....

I have to put my two cents in. I have a meat-eating, Manhattan-dwelling friend that swears by Union Hall's veggie burger. I finally tried it, and have to admit that I'm a fan. There's curry in there somewhere... what's not to like?

Another vote for Bonnie's veggie burger. I've tried many, and this one is damn good. Mind you, I think with veggie burgers it's 90% about the toppings.

I like this nasty falafel style veggie ball in a pita that Do Jo serves smothered in carrot dressing, the sunsomething burger that Cafe Yaffa serves, Angelika's Tempeh Rueban, and fake meat entrees at Red Bamboo.

I quite liked the one at Johnny Mack's (11th St. and 8th Ave.). It's a soft burger that doesn't try to mimic meat, but tastes really good. Their fries are the awesome, thick, hearty kind.

Are you looking for meat-like veggie burgers or just tasty veggie burgers, or do you not care?

I had a good one somewhere in NYC recently, but can't remember where.

The best veggie burger ever is at Claire's Corner Copia in New Haven, CT., for what it's worth. It's the perfect damn veggie burger.
