Union Hall?

I have never been but thought of going tonight. What sort of crowd is usually there? I am in my early 40s, will i feel out of place?

I haven't been there in a while, but my experience is that it caters to all ages -- I've definitely seen lots of people your age there. Later (like post-1am) I feel like it can sometimes (not always though) get waaaaay too crowded and feel a little meat-markety, but hey, maybe that's your scene

You will feel right at home. The place welcomes all ages - even a 90-year old man would be comfortable. Enjoy!

Yah go!!!!!!!!!! I went on Saturday night and it was a refreshing mix of people and ages after the children we met at the Gate!

OK, good to know! Hubby hates bars, but, Union Hall seems more than just a bar. Besides, hubby has to do what I want tonight-thanks again!

i'm 28 and i get annoyed at the young preppie crowd at union hall.

I actually thought about going to beast tonight for this shindig, especially since I have already met you guys. And, I have always wanted to go to Beast, just not sure how hubby would feel about going to a place to meet "internet" people. I will feel him out on it!

Maybe the above posters are referring to a different Union Hall. As with any ole bar there are good nights and bad ones, however, the closer you get to the weekend the more relevant my post from ages ago becomes:

"Union Hall -- interesting, very interesting... it's the kind of place where everyone is looking to get laid but nobody does because they're all idiots. Keep an eye out for a popped collar, spilled drinks, or a stray punch from someone who clearly can’t handle their booze. On the bright side it’s big, normally crowded, bartenders are pretty slow, and don’t expect a buy back… wait that’s not good.

I will say that the crowed is mixed - think white (real white), blended with a part 21-27 youth who are too educated and jaded to even be doe eyed anymore. Part whatever we are calling Park Slope's version of the classic yuppie.. and part whoever else finds this crowed entertaining.

Also, the bocce ball court is packed, disorganized, and ruined.

I really hate bashing a bar... bars are the cornerstone of civilization. Places to drink, celebrate, commensurate, masturbate.. places to steal kisses, shot glasses and toilet paper... places to feel right at home or to drift, anonymously into the alcohol soaked fabric of the bartenders' weave.

This place doesn't do that for me. Never did.

Hm. Well, LTS the other place I have seen lots of varied people is Aji. Plus then you can hang out with Veets' grandbaby and drink amazing pisco sours and flirt shamelessly with Piero and Walter.

Been to Aji, good restaurant, but it doesn't strike me as much of a bar atmosphere. And, i wouldn't be flirting with Piero, lol, hubby wouldn't appreciate that. Gonna try to convince hubby about Beast, we shall see. it looks like fun

Spot on description. I feel as if I'm at a bar in the 'burbs. Very little diversity in the crowd, very fratty and the few times I have been there I never once got a buy back from the bartender. I'd say if you looking for a cool spot to hang, have some good convo and get a little loose, head to Barrette up on Vanderbilt. Place is awesome.

i think union hall is great.

everytime i've been, it's been a blast.

the crowd is very diverse, the space is great, they have some great live music in the basement sometimes and the bocce is really fun.

the people are super friendly, and i've met many new people there. i have a friend from manhattan who almost never even comes out to brooklyn, and she ended up having her bday party there and it was a total ball...everyone really enjoyed themselves.

goes to show that everyone has different tastes...

Nope, nothing sad about it, and , no, not everyone in their 40s has things in common with each other. but, I also don't want to walk into a place where absolutely everyone there is in their early 20s and I and my hubby would feel totally out of place and like their parents and we don't belong.

I agree with LTS, I'm not even close to 40 but I HATE going to places packed with kids in their early 20's. I have nothing in common. That said, I do have friends that are sprite young things that I'll hang out at bars with, but they happen to be pretty wise and brilliant gals.

Union Hall, like all bars is filled with 20 somethings. I mean, go to Smithys if you want an "older" crowd. But I must disagree with the diversity issue. That place is FILLED with native slopers; and they are, guess what, all colors. You guys speak about diversity, but given the racial breakdown of the nabe, what are you expecting? It's not all just white people there for chrissakes, give me a fkn break.
too bad the bartenders suck. the usual eye rolling young tarts who lean against the bar does NOT have time for you. or you. no matter what color or how old you are.

I hate the bar scene around here. I'm over 40 (like, way over 40). I also have hipsterphobia. In addition, a fear of alcoholic drinks that cost more than $10 because they are served in some chi-chi overcrowded place full of young people looking to get laid. I seriously have better things to do with my time.

I like those old fashioned places with a few permanents sitting at the bar from open to close, and a bartender named O'Malley who throws you an extra shot every now and then.

Theres better bars in the area. 4th Ave Pub and Black Sheep Pub have more drink options and less crowded.

Flatbush Farm as a similar feel but for some reason I like it while Im not the biggest Union Hall fan. 3 dollar High Life is always nice too.
