need some new luggage--where to look?

The bf and I desperately need some carry-on bags, as we seem to be on airplanes fairly often.

A store with options is good. Nothing fancy, just something that is well-made and not over-priced because of the logo on it. The stuff at the "flight..." store on 5th seems a bit pricey, but I've not bought a bag in a long time so maybe I'm just out of touch.

Anyway, I'll probably be getting two so proximity to subway or cabs is good. I was wondering if Burlington at the Atlantic mall has much selection. How about Century 21, and if so, which one?

Normally I'd just go on an adventure to find this sort of thing, walking all over Manhattan and looking in various bag shops but it's too freaking cold for my wimpy but to do that. I need fast, efficient shopping!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Theres a good luggage store on Broadway and 12th i think, in the city. There're a little pricey but the selection is abundant, and you dont have to go around to a million places - they have everything from all the trusted brands. You can even go in there to take a look at what they have, and then do a search online to see if you can get a better price online.

I forget the name of the store, but they're right there on broadway. I got an amazing timberland rolling suitcase with tucked away backpack straps which also comes with a matching backpack and has a lifetime warranty (and fits in the airplane aisles!). I went in there 2 days before a big international trip and left with exactly what i needed...

I got a cool Diane Von Furstenberg bag a couple of years ago at Marshalls of all places. It's a large roller and it was about 50 bucks.

I know the store you're talking about! I got the perfect "man-bag" for my bf there last year, but I was so focused on picking something he would actually use, that I paid no attention to the other stuff. May check it out...

Burlington & Marshall's both have good selections, as well as Century 21. I can only speak on the one in the city.

You can get cheaper/discount bags at TJ Maxx and Marshalls as Anastasia suggested, but if you're looking for variety and tons of different ones to choose from and don't want to have to buy a new one later on, this is the spot. I'll have the luggage i got there for the rest of my life...

I bought mine at LuggageOnline. A 5 piece nested Samsonite set.

I'm traveling a lot. It's holding up well (except the red gets dirty).

I also bought a Targus combo laptop/overnight bag through Amazon.

Century 21 has a lot of options as well. I imagine both locations would.

there used to be a bunch of cheap luggage places on Orchard St, on the LES. I think they are still some, even post gentrification.

I love this place on the lower east side (135 Orchard St between Delancey & Rivington):

They have a large selection in every price range, and if you actually go there, you'll get a much better price than their online store. It's old school LES in that everything is negotiable.

I got this Brigg & Reilly one there and I loved it so much, I got a matching one for Mrs. C for our last trip. It's the maximum size permitted for carry-on (22x14x9). Actually, it's 22x14x8.5, but it actually fits in the measuring thing at the gate, including the wheels, handle and everything. And the layout inside really allows you to maximize the use of the space. I used to love my hard Samsonite case of the same size, but I like this one even better.

You're welcome to my old baggage, and while you're at it, I've got a skeleton in the same closet I no longer need.

Went there today since I was in the area and found them to be really helpful. They do have a huge selection and if what you want isn't on the floor, make sure to ask b/c their warehouse is around the corner so they can bring you other things quickly.

I ended up with a Samsonite bag (2 of it actually) that met all of our criteria and it was on sale! And yes, go in person b/c they do give good discounts in store compared to their website. And it's near an F train.

I got two other things I'd been looking for: a toiletry travel bag for the dude and a huge "purse" that will nicely fit my laptop and camera and can count as my personal item more easily than a bulky backpack on flights. Lots of good stuff there.

Thanks for all the help folks!
