Last night around 10pm I saw a HUGE raccoon on Henry and Congress Streets. I think that thing weighed in at about 17 lbs.
Possibly rabid and well fed on cat food left out under fences in the vicinity.

watch your garbage, your pets and small children!!!!

Why do you think the raccoon is rabid? The challenge is when you see them out during the daytime. And they can weigh 20lbs or so under the right circumstances. Usually they won't bother you unless you cornor them. Then things can get ugly quickly.

Actually, Brooklyn has a very large, very healthy raccoon population. dakotas way is right - unless you see them in the middle of the day, there is no reason to think they're rabid.

    ok. thanks.
but i will be diligent about keeping my dog from cornering the critter.
also, keeping garbage from being torn up.

Now the garbage being ripped up is another story. They can break into almost anything and are incredibly smart. I think the most efficient way to keep them out of the garbage would be the plastic cans with tops that kind of snap closed and then have handles that pull up over the side handles of the tops themselves. Does that make sense?? Kind of hard to describe.
