packages stolen from building--might be con-ed??

yesterday someone in my building got a package that one of our tenants--a person we trust--signed for. it was left in front of the recipient's door.

when he got home, no package. he asked the tenant if she'd seen anything and said only that she'd signed for it, and that con-ed had also been in the building.

if our meters are in the basement, and nobody calls con-ed, why the f* would they need to come into the building? of course, the package contained his new blackberry.

he filed a police report, then told the rest of us.

anything happen to anyone else like this?

nope. i wonder what the package looked like, that is, could one tell that there was a blackberry in there?
are you certain con-ed was there?

i'd wager that blackberry is still in your building.

a: it was a fed ex box

b: the tenant who signed for the package also let con-ed in at some point later in the day

c: i doubt that

There are a lot of Con Ed related scams going on lately. there seems to be a few companies claiming to be Con Ed or related to con ed and once they are in the building, they not only try to get people to switch to their electric service but I have recently heard of them also asking for money. so, perhaps, it wasn't really con Ed she let in. Did she look to see if it was truly Con Ed or ask for ID or why they were there?

Its not a Con Ed person. Con Ed has other ways they steal from you. If anything the meter readers are the most honest employees Con Ed has. How exactly are you going to walk around the neighborhood with a Fed Ex box under your arm in full uniform or stand somewhere on the street ripping it open? On top of that their meter reading machine tells the office exactly where they're at during their shift. Do you think they'd risk taking an unknown envelope knowing they could be pegged at that location? On top of that these people are subject to lie detector tests. They are the first ones to suspect flat connections or a possible bypass of a gas meter. Very very doubtful.

That sucks. I had to have 2 Blackberries delivered to me at home in the past week. Luckily I was there to answer the door.

Were there any guests over? Or tenants friends who have keys, where somebody might have piggy-backed through the door when somebody came in?

I would, however, investigate whether it was truly a Con Ed person in the building, or just an impostor ESCO person. those people are shady as hell, and it would also explain why they were seen in the building, and not just the basement, cause the ESCO people will go door to door trying to trick people into switching service.

Have your neighbor contact the sender and advise them they never received the package, as the deliverer gave it to someone else, who was not authorized to accept their deliveries.

tell them to send a new blackberry and they should take it up with the delivery service, if they refuse cancel the charge for the purchase.

I had similar problem last year with an I Pod , Fed-X said they tried to make a delivery and I wasn't home. .
I told them to contact the driver and redeliver it before he went back to the warehouse , they called me back and said he had it and he would be back at the warehouse at 7pm, I went there at 7;30 and he didn't return, they said they would hold it and call me in the AM so I could pick it up.

I called in the AM and they said he couldn't find it, she then said quite a few items just vanish and I should contact the sender and have them take it up with Fed-X

I did and two days later I received my I Pod.

That truly stinks. However with all the deliveries people get; from Fresh Direct to Chinese, there are many opportunities that are too good to pass up. If you've been in the business awhile, you know what to look for. Even UPS workers are not above the occassional theft. I was shocked when a very valuable package was left OUTSIDE of my door. For anyone to see and take! Luck of the draw, and it stinks

Why didn't the person who signed for it just hold it? The whole reason someone has to sign is to ensure the completion of the delivery. Why would they sign and just leave it by your door? They should have given it directly to you hand to hand. ANYONE could have taken the package and its pretty hopeless.

where is your apt in relation to where the con ed guy would have to go?

if it is far removed it doesnt seem plausible that someone would randomly start cruising the building to steal any packages that may or may not have been left outside a door.

we are a small building, the typical 8 unit limestone. con ed would need to read meters or come to specific apartments if they are called. .

Have you ruled out food delivery? Someone could have buzzed in a food delivery person. My wife had the back wheel of her bike stolen on the 4th floor of our apartment building a couple years back. In fact, we think we buzzed them up!
