Hey guys -

Haven't seen any mention of this place yet so I wanted to give it a shout. I stopped in last weekend being drawn in by the big "WE HAVE STUMPTOWN COFFEE" scribbled on the A-frame out front. Having seen this space go from a mediocre sandwich place to a mediocre coffee shop I went in with low expectations. As such, I was much more than pleasantly surprised.

The whole place has been newly decorated with vintage electronics and knick-knacks - has a kind of "quirky uncle's attic" feel to it. A couple overstuffed couches were there too.

I would lay down my life for the pressed coffee at Southside, and am really particular - but this was really quality stuff too. I just had coffee so I can't vouch for their espresso drinks or tea. They also had Blue Sky Bakery muffins which got me even more excited.

Anyhow - it's really cool to see someone in that space putting forth a solid effort at excellence and all around good vibe-iness. I think there's a large enough difference in the atmosphere for Roots and Southside to co-exist a mere block and a half apart - so show the new place some love if you get the chance. The owner's name is Jamey and he was super nice - he also told me they'll be having live music every weekend. Here's their website - which doesn't have too much for now: www.rootscafebrooklyn.com

To conclude: Roots Cafe is a great new spot - tell your friends.

This place blows away Cafe Sutra in every way I've seen so far. So if you liked Sutra I think you'll really like Roots.
