Dear Prospect Heights neighbors,

Last night I parked my car on Stering Place between Washington and Underhill. This morning, I went to drive to work and my car was missing. I have spent the good part of the morning trying to find out if it was towed. At this time, there is no record of it being towed. I did not park in front of a fire hydrant and have no outstanding tickets. I think it has been STOLEN. My car is a 1999 Black 2 door Honda Civic. It went missing sometime betweent the hours of 5:20pm 1/6/09 and 8:45am 1/7/09. If anyone saw anything PLEASE let me know.

Not to bum you out but the Civic is a pretty popular car to be stolen.
I think 1995 Civics are at the top of the list...

But keep trying the tow yards!
    Fingers crossed.

I know. But, I have been parking this car on the street in NYC since 2000. And, in the Heights since 2006. I am moving in 2 days and have to wonder, why NOW? Has anyone noticed a rise in thefts as the economy tanks?

Damn man, Civics of that vintage are a hot ticket. Was it black w/a stickshift and sunroof?

Might be a long shot, but if you don't get any other leads, you could try to check security camera footage in the area.

I know 44 Butler Place has a camera that faces Sterling (looking West). The large building post-war building on the southeast corner of Sterling and Vanderbilt has a camera (looking East). Some of the shops on Underhill also have them.

Bummer. I'm really sorry to hear this. Those Civics were great little cars.

parts, its about parts. Not whole cars.

people wreck a car, then need parts... they don't have collision coverage because it is an old car.

bodyshop guy: "I know someone who can get that $500 door (whatever part) for you. You leave us your wrecked car, we'll get you that part."

...a short while later, a car of the same type is missing...

My BF had his car towed but it NEVER showed up on the system. We checked repeatedly and he called the precinct regularly (in Manhattan- long story). We thought it was stolen and sold for parts, as I didn't totally trust the person caring for it.

After a month and half though, he got a letter from the city stating that he'd abandoned the car (it HAD been towed) and that he could be charged up to $1000 for "environmental removal" or something to that effect. The "system" isn't working correctly. I advise to keep calling, and if you have to, physically GO DOWN to the tow yards and try to speak to someone.

Look at the signs around the place you parked. Is there ANY possible way it could have been towed and NOT stolen?

Any updates on the car?? Your experience is just reason #398 why I know that I'm not up to owning a car in this city.

I'm thinking good thoughts. Do keep us posted.

    Man that sucks.

I'm getting a car but I plan on leasing a garage spot, for this reason. And for the constant dings reason.

Hey im pretty sure your car is out in front of my apartment. Look on prospect place between vanderbuilt and underhill. More towards underhill. The car has a ticket on it and one of those stickers from the sanitation department. plus the lock on the passenger side looks like it was jimied.
