Anyone listen to the new Animal Collective record? By far, i'd say it is one of the best albums of '09. I'm wondering if there are any other fans out there that might have a take on the album?

This morning i listened to Brian Wilson's "Smile" record and then switched over to the new AC record noticing many similarities between their new release and Smile.

I think that perhaps (not based solely on this record), 2009 may be a good year for new music.

Thoughts?

Pitchfork went nuts for the album, 9.6/10, but have not found time to listen to it end to end. Those guys are rarely wrong so, coupled with your comments, this will push me to make some time this weekend. Though, "best of '09" is a flimsy title given the short 21 day march we have so far trekked.

    They're wrong about Fleet Foxes.

Really? I dig that disc. It takes some getting used to - the neo-Brian Wilson genre; as with Panda Bear as well. They were spot on with Fucked Up.

Eh. Sounds more like a MMJ mimic than anything.

TV on the Radio was album of the year.

I would agree about Pitchfork. When saying "best of '09" i did take into consideration any other albums that will be released this year...but for right now and for me...this will be on my top 10 list automatically.

I would definitely suggest taking a listen to it as soon as you can...this new record is different from their past records without subjecting their roots to complete change.

How about No Age? Listen to them?

The "L" mag has actually done a decent review of the new AC record...check it out if you haven't already...

i haven't listened to the entire fleet foxes record, but from their myspace and tv performances i can only give them a big M.O.R. YAWN.

MPP sounds neat at points but sort of gives me a headache. i still think they haven't put out a better record than campfire songs.

i agree about the Fleet Foxes...im very bored with that record...i couldn't really even get through one entire song. BUT, i disagree with the Animal Collective take. Campfire songs? are you kidding me? please explain where you get that? haha

i don't know, it's hard to explain, i just love that record. it's a pure event, you might even say it's one of the best live albums ever recorded. the purity of it, how they are in sync with nature for the recording. it just kills me every time. it just seemed like both dudes were on top of their game as far as songwriters, singers, guitar players, improvisers. while the other records are craft and composition, this one is a performative masterpiece.

also i get a sick satisfaction out of knowing a cd i paid $10 for 5 years ago is now worth $30-40 on ebay.

I think the record is ASS BORING. It's got one winner, "Brother Sport," which just seems to be a cover of El Guincho, no?

Wait, sorry, I meant, WHOA!!! TOTALLY BEST RECORD OF THE YEAR! OBAMA BEST PRESIDENT EVER! THIS YEAR'S GONNA BE HANDS DOWN THE BEST YEAR OF THE MILLENIUM!!!

whew.... sorry, blew my "best of the X" wad there way too early. how embarrassing.

yeah, this record is amazing. never really got into AC as much as i did with panda bear, but this one might be as good as person pitch.

i was so happy to see this thread.

well, yeah, this record is pretty dope. I am looking forward to seeing them perform some of these tunes live...i wasn't necessarily too keen on them when i saw them play at All Points West over the summer (prob. due to standing right in front of the speakers with the snare drum hits piercing my brain) but after another song and moving in towards the middle...priceless.

Priceless? More like $89 for a single day pass, $258 for a three day pass. + applicable service fees.

To me, since I only went on Saturday...it was worth it. The main reason i was even there was to see Radiohead...although some of the other bands were pretty decent too.

I'm definitely not the type to argue that the price was a bit too high...but sometimes, that's the price ya gotta pay.

I've been tryin time and time again for years to understand what people get so crazy about Animal Collective for an I just don't see it. There's a few parts of Sung Tongs I kinda enjoyed and one or two on Feels that were pretty decent but as a whole I just can't get into it.

Fact, but Fucked Up has been amazing long before Pitchfork started jockin' their balls.

I hear Fucked Up invented hardcore.

Wait, sorry, what I meant to say was that Fucked Up brought a watered down version of hardcore to the Matador public.

I wouldn't really consider Fucked Up a hardcore band. They just get classified as one cause it's the closest thing indie music reviewers can think of and they just haveta put a special little name on everything.

A little late, but I love this song. If someone made a remix of this, it could be the unstoppable indie dance song of '09.
