Why do people in Brownstones buy furniture at Ikea and then we see the Meier building filling with old-world brown furniture? There's a post about it at beinbrooklyn.com

I have no idea what you are talking about. I live in a PS and bought all my 20's -50's furniture via craigslist. Also, Meier people have more money and are buyers right? So they have more invested in the place hence more money poured into it. Most brownstone in PS, like mine, are all rentals, so more cheap Ikea furniture and young tenets.

Whats' you point with this post?

The point is a modern building should have contemporary furniture and you brownstone would benefit from some Eastlake.

The real question is, what do nuevo-Brooklyn types have against curtains and shades? I don't get the whole "Life on Display" thing, especially with people who live on the first floors of buildings. All the families I grew up with in Brooklyn used to have curtains or shades. Anyone care to enlighten me as to the newcomers' thought process?

hmmm, there's a saying about Conservatives with nothing to hide having curtains, but Liberals who should have curtains doing without them...

ah, yes... very good. If I had a couple million to spare, I may buy one. The view of the plaza must be awesome. Sunlight is bad for fine furniture, however. Plus the first bird I saw hit the glass, I'd be devastated my apartment caused the poor thing's death.

maybe the windows have UV protection built in.

...but I agree, I think the building is dumb.

i know i might draw some comments here, but after disliking that building for so long... i have to admit that it's starting to grow on me. perhaps it is because i despise birds and like to stare at strangers, but i don't hate it as much as i once did. I do wish they would get some shades going though.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this re: fishbowl buildings-- I notice that what bothers me isn't seeing people or what they're doing because of no curtains. What I find distracting is the extra light at night coming from all the open glass and any large televisions on walls. I think this is a pretty minor complaint, all in all, but it is the thing I notice most at night walking down the street, how my eyes are drawn to the brightest thing on the block which is often someone's tv screen. Its amazing to me how much that can change what you find yourself looking at while walking down the street or hanging out on a roof. It's not really a change I like too much.

Forgot to say how entertaining I found the thread Whynot posted. Lots of good fun, but I gotta give the biggest kudos on that one to Karl the Druid. I was howling.
