weird popping noises, sunday 1/26 12:30 am midnight

are there fireworks going off somewhere? the rhythm doesn't sound like fireworks, but i'm not sure what the sound is-- it's like a muted popping. maybe construction? sometimes its louder (closer) and then not so loud.

i'm prone to think it's the sound of bullets, but maybe that's just my imagination.

any ideas? should the police be called?

I'm thinking fireworks for the Chinese New Year.

I hear that when I pinch my nostrils and hold my breath. I think I called 911 only once.
