broke my damn toe

So, New Year's Eve I get up at a friend's house to get something and I slide across the wood floor (by accident) Risky Business-style and smash my toe (the one next to the big one) into the wall. The middle knuckle swells up and turns purple immediately.

Six weeks later and it still hurts and while the discoloration went away for a while, it's back again.

I keep trying to loosely tape that toe to the one next to it, but it just doesn't seem to be enough. It sucks because I'm getting back into yoga and it hurts too much for some poses

How long does it normally take to heal? any ideas?

    um, see a physician?

...did the friend get a video? Sounds like it would be worth watching.

Broken toes take quite a long time, and I don't think the doctor will generally do anyhing for you aside from taping it. My mom broke her baby toe and it took about 6 months to fully heal.

No video, although it was quite the slide. Next time I see my doctor, I will show him, but I think Carmen is right - aside from taping it, there isn't much that they can do.

    Subject: Dr. McCoy

If you need a good foot doctor, I would recommend Dr. McCoy, 25 CPW, (212) 262-4588. I'm not sure what insurance they take but you may want to give a call (they treat a lot of ballet dancers there). I remember you wrote about this at the time it happened. I'm sorry you're still having problems with your toe. Good luck!

A doctor will charge you a lot of money to tell you there is nothing to be done with a broken toe except to stabilize it and carefully let it heal. Because you are using your feet all the time, broken toes can take a very long time to heal and will rarely heal back to their original form.

i broke one of my small toes last summer. sucks. took 6 weeks or so to heal. look up how to tape it properly online. basically you secure it to its neighbor, but make sure you're not cutting off circulation.

unless it's your big toe or seems very out of alignment, there's not much point in paying to see a doctor for it, in my un-medical-schooled opinion.

thanks eveybody. I did a google search on how to tape it. I didn't have padding in between the toes before taping. Now I do and it's more comforatble.
