Seating near the river front in Sunset Park.

I am walking distance from 1st avenue where the borough of Brooklyn ends and the East River begins. I would really like to find a nice seating spot or river front walk way around there. I went walking today and noticed that much of the area from 36th to 55th is blocked off by "private" shipping companies, factories and abandoned looking warehouses. Is there a riverfront walkway in Sunset Park or perhaps a little river front seating area? I know in Dumbo, you can sit right under the bridge in that park, and all down Manhattan they have a wonderful East River AND Hudson walkway. Am I just not finding the Sunset Park version of this?

Who could I contact to find out how I can advocate for a walkway/riverfront seating area for Sunset Park, if there isn't one?

As far as I know, there isn't one in SP. Bay Ridge has a nice promenade area as well as Red Hook but I think Sunset is still a bit too "industrial" to have a real seating area yet.

There are plans for a riverwalk type of thing in the future. It might be scrapped due to funding, however. As Anastasia said, BR has areas for seating...the pier can be used for that. There's also a pier around 55th or so that can be used at times.

The pier at 69th St. in BR is vile. Fishermen leave their bait, fish guts, etc. all over the place.

It's worth the extra distance to use the run/bike way farther south.

The only area I know is the 69th Street pier (agree with the ick factor) but the "bike path" runs from 69th street to Bay Parkway with multiple spots to sit and take in the view. Several overpasses run over the Belt Parkway - 79th Street, 4th Ave/100th Street, Bay 16th Street.

You would think that they would connect this venue to the promenade.

Sigh. There was going to be a park, between 43rd and 51st. I don't know what happened to that. I know last year there was talk about the 197-a community plan, but that's much bigger in scope and doesn't necessarily talk about the park itself.

I remember that! I also remember there were scheduled renovations to the "bike path" and the two abandoned "piers" - one at the base of the Verrazano which had some historic relevance and the other approximately at 73rd street. What a pity. We get the promises and Manhattan gets the actual benefits.

I don't know if I would feel entirely safe walking down to the waterfront in Sunset Park - or along/behind some of the industrial spots.

Is the ferry to Manhattan still running from Sunset Park? It used to run from the 69th Street pier (hell, I vaguely remember the Staten Island ferry running from there) - then moved.

It didn't while I lived there (2004 - 2006), but I'm not sure there wasn't one running from another spot.

According to the NY Water Taxi site, it's still in service from the BAT (58th Street).

The pier the Water Taxi runs from is not unpleasant for sitting and gazing at the water, especially at sunset. And I don't recall any fish guts there....

The 59th Street Pier is not bad, I just wish there were some trees. The ferry still runs during the week, but it's too expensive if you don't on Wall Street. I t was free for a year or two after 9/11.

I was just down on the 59th Street Pier and agree with CEY and Raedog. It's actually pretty nice, though I can imagine the lack of trees is oppressive on a really hot day -- that's the same for the pier down by 69th St., too, though. There are some fishermen, but overall it's a lot less populated than 69th St., as well as being a lot closer for SSP residents.
(Also, for people who have young kids learning to ride bikes, it strikes me as a perfect place to practice on weekends! Very long unoccupied stretches of parking spaces.)
