Subject: Anyone know a Bookstore that buys used Books?

Don't know if I posted this in the right place. Wondering if anyone knew any Book stores that buy used books? I have alot of books i want to sell and get rid of.

the one on bergen st, btw 5th and 6th aves, buys books.

sorry, don't know what it's called...it's right by babeland and the new comic book store. i was in there yesterday though and the guy bought someone's books while i was shopping.

there is a site similar to this one that compares the prices across various online book buyers. I can't recall the url right now but it is not hard to find with teh google

All second-hand bookstores will buy books, but they generally are quite selective. Unfortunately, the internet (and B&N) are putting walk-in used book stores out of business one after the other. There used to be some great bookstores on 7th Ave., especially the old 7th Avenue Books near 7th St., run by Tom Simon (who also ran the newer one, also closed) and Park Slope Books. They are all gone, except for the stores that sell new books.

Unnameable is a nice place.

I recall a charmingly messy one on a Court St. corner, near Baltic or so.

If you can't get a good deal at Unnameable, there's a great used bookstore in Dumbo: P.S. Bookshop, off Jay Street going towards the water from the F train York St. station:

They have excellent used art and photography books, and a fine all-around selection, including some sheet music and a bit of everything else. High qual place, nice people, good for the community. They probably pay ok for good used books.

Unless Bank of America goes into the used book business, another 7th Ave. bookstore seems remote...

And oh yes... the venerable Gryphon Books in Manhattan will buy books and pay decent prices. On B'way between 80th & 81st. If they didn't own the building, they'd surely be out of business as well. Don't bother with Strand, unless you have at least a Gutenberg Bible. Skyline Books on 18th bet. 5th and 6th may still be in business.

BTW, if they are not interested in your books, you can always donate them to the Brooklyn Public Library for a tax credit. they take hardcover, paperbacks, foreign, cooking and kids' books, you name it!

Camaysar, that one on Court was also a Community Books. There's a looooong story there...But let's just say the difference in the 2 Community Books is indicative of other irreconcilable differences.

I worked in Tom Simon's shop the week it closed. He was my previous boss at 2 other companies; brilliant guy. So sad that the store had to close.

Yes, ljnd, Tom knows his stuff, and was a real asset to the nabe. His offer to customers of hourly work in the store for book discounts was a great idea. Tom had a rough time of it as his store was about to fold, and you probably know that he had lots to deal with... sad all around.

I imagine he is still selling books via ABE, etc. But one cannot browse shelves and leaf through books online. A real loss.

you can always trek them to the Strand near Union Square.

Amazon.com recently annoyed me. I tried to return a book to Amazon.com within a week after receiving it. I didn't even open the book, but Amazon.com refused to accept it and advised me to re-sell it to another one of their customers through Amazon.com. I wanted to get rid of the book and get my money back fast, so I did what Amazon.com advised and immediately sold the book to some stranger for slightly more than what I paid. I felt used, like a pawn forced to play some dumb dot.com game.

True, but Strand is extremely selective, and pays less than other stores. I'd try smaller stores first.

This site compares most of the online book buy back sites. some even offer free shipping. I just got $4.10 for 2 books; journey to Ixtlan and unbearable lightness of being.
