Subject: Here's why your phone may have been out this past week-end

Fire in a manhole on Prospect Place took out the electrical and phone wires under the street and toasted the phone switching box. All the phone lines in the box on the right had to be rewired into the box on the left. Took 6 guys from Verizon over 30 hours to fix the phones. Con Ed only took about 6 hours to fix the electrical wires. The last few pictures of the fire were several hours after the FD left. The Con Ed guys just stood there and watched it burn for about 10 minutes until the big finale when there were a bunch of small explosions one after another. Then they walked over with a fire extinguisher, put out the fire, and started fixing it.
