when i just opened my hotmail e-mail address, it opened but nothing was in my inbox or sent box. only thing still there was my address book. so then i checked my other hotmail account which i rarely use, and it was the same deal there

i can’t imagine hotmail would just delete all mail of all their users with no warning. whats going on? is anyone else having this problem?

I was trying to get on last night too. I freaked out thinking my emails were erased. Jesus!

    Anyways, so glad it's back.

I've felt so much better since I started using popmail (with the native OSX Mail program) for my Yahoo mail account. Now I know that whatever happens to Yahoo's servers, my mail is backed up on my computer. It's also good for traveling, since I only need to go online for a minute to retrieve mail. Then I can read and reply offline, and then connect again for another minute to send out the replies. It's very useful when you have to pay exorbitant per-hour rates abroad.

Another solution: Gmail now allows offline access. It downloads some amount of your mail (you can select how far back to go) to your computer, where you can access it through the normal browser interface even without an Internet connection -- or when you have just a weak WiFi connection that can't stay connected.
