Subject: What's a good place for retail beer by the bottle?

I want to get a nice selection of beers for a friend but I know nothing about beer. who has a nice selection of beer byt the bottle and can help me pick? Fairway seemed to have some but didn't really have singles, except for large bottles.

Not sure if they sell singles, but I'd try Bierkraft or Eagle Provisions

Bierkraft sells singles and all the staff I've dealt with have been really friendly and happy to help with stuff like this.

Eagle is a great place to buy beer. I will pick up some of what I have tried before and like and then get afew to try for the first time. If we have company and some interesting new to try beers on hand we open the bottle and then give everyone a small glass and a taste of that one (or those). brings up good conversation and opinions.

I have to put in a vote for Bierkraft. They allegedly carry over 900 beers, mostly sold as singles, with about a dozen fresh on tap to take home in growlers. I actually used to hate beer -- chalk it up to peer-pressured pounding of PBRs at my last low-wage job -- until I attended a couple of Bierkraft's weekly tasting. The draw at the time was the fact that, at the tastings, they often pair their beers with cheese or chocolate or charcuterie, all of which they also sell. Now I can roll in and have a semi-knowledgeable conversation with the staff about their selection; they're always willing to help.

Fifth Ave. between Berkeley and Union. As far as I'm concerned, it is a one-stop purveyor of deliciousness.

Eagle - hands down. Was just there today - simply amazing beer selection.

I've been to Bierkraft. They're really nice and helpful there (and in a non-annoying way). So many to choose from (and even some from my ol' neck of the woods in Maine).

I haven't been to Eagle Provisions though. Where are they located? I'd love to stop in and see how they compare to Bierkraft.

Bierkraft will absolutely help you find the right brew for your friend. It's the perfect place for someone who's looking for a good brew, but doesn't know where you start. Easiest choice ever. :)

if your willing to venture outside of PS over to Prospect Heights
the beer distributor store called Brooklyn Beer and Soda
648 Washington Ave. has all kinds of beers and for a good price too
AND just recently they have added a tap section where you can purchase growlers with specialty beers such as Sixpoint (at present they offer 3 or 4 of their beers)

oh and you can also buy single bottles as well

and if your not sure what a growler is this ought to help

I actually worry about Bierkraft's viability in the future. it seems to me like what was once a novelty is something that can be found about anywhere. Even when I travel to Connecticut to see my in-laws, liquor stores that used to focus only on hard liquor and wine now carry an extremely wide variety of beers. Bierkraft used to be the only place where I could get, say, an Innis & Gunn, but they're much simpler to find now, even out of the city.

So, absolutely folks, continue to support Bierkraft.

OK I've been to Bierkraft and the selection is overwhelming but I got some great help and was gratified that they didn't push my spending limit, as too many places will do. Been to many a wine store where I wanted to spend $15 and was shown all kinds of $18-$20 bottles

Just another shout-out for Grab on 7th between 14th and 15th.

They've got a handful of beers on tap for growlers, and an impressive variety of specialty bottles. Biercraft is no doubt the authority on this sort of thing, but if you're in the south end of the slope, Grab is an excellent alternative.

Good cheese and charcuterie to boot.

I was also wondering how we'd missed this place and I realized where it is today. 5th Ave and 18th Street. Their beer selection is very extensive (equal to or larger than Joe Brian's on Flatbush for comparison) but it is a grocery store which is fine if you know what you like, but I think Bierkraft is better if you want advice.

Eagle also had a nice selection of garden plants, too! Tomatoes, impatiens and such.
