Tavern on Nostrand

The chicken soup with dumplings from Gloria's on Nostrand is incredible! Just thinking of it makes me wish that I were sick and needed a home remedy.

Cycling from one end of the neighborhood to the next - whether one believes it to begin at Washington or Franklin The neighborhood is rich with architecture and riding a bike is a great way to appreciate it. Watching for old synagogues is a pastime of mine - there are some on Rochester, Saratoga, and Ralph Avenues - long since converted to churches- with well-preserved exteriors.

The Weeksville Houses are an interesting sight. It amazes me that they've survived all of these years. Few structures from that time period remain, so it's good to see them intact.

From my end of town I would say:

McKenzie's Cafe on Utica
White Castle for cheap eats that are not so cheap anymore

From my hang out areas:
Franklin Park
Fish spot on Nostrand somewhere between Sterling and St. Johns
The Jamaican Restaurant on Franklin across from 95 South for the Jerk Chicken

For parks I would have to say "Crown Park" . There really is no Crown Park but if you can change Crown Heights to Prospect Heights I may as well be able to change Prospect Park to Crown Park.

For real though, I really enjoy sitting on Eastern Parkway with a book in the summer sometimes when I get off the train so I will name Eastern Parkway as one of my favorites in Crown Heights.

President Street is a great block to walk down especially from Nostrand down towards Troy. You get to see the architecture of the neighborhood in its many different forms.

Wait a sec. I've been totally with you on your Crown Heights border argument thus far. Really, I have. But are The Islands and Manhattans really to be considered "Crown Heights" locales simply because they fall on the eastern side of Washington?

God help me, but I think that's debatable.

As for my Crown Heights inexpensive choices du jour, I'd go with Bristen's and their lovely chicken & waffles, Homage for the great teryaki burgers, and, finally, Bombay Palace on Franklin has some great Indian food. I've enjoyed Tavern on Nostrand's food, drink and general atmosphere, but haven't been there in a while and thought I remembered reading here that it was under new management or something. I'll have to check it out. I've also been known to be a fan of the occasional fresh, hot pastrami & swiss sub from Brooklyn Deli at Classon & Lincoln.

By the way, Franklin Park isn't exacly "inexpensive", so fails my list.

If I were to do a similar list for Prospect Heights, I'd include Sepia, Manhattans, The Islands and, to appeal to my inner, grease-loving 3:am drunk, the so-called Dirty Kitchen at the back of that bodega, across Flatbush between Sterling and Park (I think... I've never been there sober). Also an occasional fan of the brunch offerings at Burrito Bar. And, finally, my wife and I have been known eat at Tavern on Dean, but its been a while.

I don't often range far enough away to visit the Vanderbilt bars to comment on them, unfortunately.

What did you eat at the "Dirty Kitchen"? They have a decent selection of girlie mags, though I can't stand the drunken loudmouth with eyepatch who panhandles in front of the place.

Okay so no more senseless arguing about a dividing line. I concede Crown Heights to include Classon but please Washington Ave is Prospect Heights. And Manhattans as a favorite. Didnt even know it was open yet.

Oops. Its actually Lincoln Deli, and the hot pastrami & swiss sub runs about $5.50, I believe.

The Dirty Kitchen is for two things and two things only... greasy, drunken egg & cheese on a roll - with bacon, of course - and greasy, drunken philly cheesesteak, neither of which are to be consumed prior to 3:00 am.

Fine, then I'll remove the Dirty Kitchen from my list of cheap Prospect Heights delights, as its clearly on the Park Slope side.

Again, as I didn't just move to the area yesterday, I've always been a proponent of Washington being the border of Prospect/Crown Heights. But I just think that saying establishments that are on the eastern side of Washington are solidly in Crown Heights is perhaps needlessly parsing the issue. They're most definitely on the border, but it wouldn't be that hard for the denizens of Prospect Heights to claim them as well.

Ugh. This seemingly endless argument is now officially the opposite of a fun and lively debate.

We just took my Niece and Nephew (4 & 7) to the new and improved Children's Museum...they had an excellent time. Check the website as they do one weekend a month that it is free to enter if you arrive before 11am. The next time is May 9th and 10th. Otherwise it's 7.50 per person...

My ideal Saturday on Franklin:

Walk up to Bristen's, get a little something to eat while I do laundry, then grab some groceries at Fisher's and produce at Nam's. Take the laundry and the groceries home, get lunch at A Slice of Brooklyn (spinach slice, broccoli slice, Dr. Pepper), and then putter up to Franklin Park for afternoon drinking. Grab a beef patty (or a spicy vegetable patty) from 3Ds on the way home, take a nap, and then head to Bombay Masala for dinner (or Chavella's if my buddy from over on Washington whines about walking all the way over to Franklin). If it's a nice day, replace that nap at home with a shuttle ride to Prospect Park and a nap on the grass.

So, the Dirty Kitchen is in that crappy bodega just near the subway stairs on the Park Slope side of Flatbush!? Just north of Anthony's Really!?!

That is what I meant, yes. Regulars at Sepia have been calling it the Dirty Kitchen for years, and I couldn't remember its real name, Albaz. Thanks.

Lunch at the nursing home cant be beat $4.50, for main dish, 2 sides and a drink. Classon, and Park pl.
The pizza in this hood is terrible, we need a pizza shop bad.

a slice of brooklyn on franklin and prospect is good for pizza.

Yes public can chow down... Its defintly not a foodie thing and no salt on anything. My fav. is the sausage and peppers. Open M-F till 3 I think. not on holidays.
