Not sure if this is the best place to post this… but, I figured that you ladies might have good radar on cheap but chic shopping in the area...

A friend of mine (male) is going to an outdoor wedding next week and is looking for a place to buy an affordable suit—i.e. under $300. We looked at Men’s Warehouse and the prices there for anything that seemed nice was over $400. We didn’t try Burlington as of yet, and I know that maybe we could find something at Macys (Herald Square) but wanted to avoid Manhattan shopping if possible.

But I was wondering if you anyone knew of any affordable places to buy suits in the area….

I've had luck at H&M. Although, the quality of the stitching is probably less than something you would get at Macy's. I figure, for something I wear about 6 times a year, it's adequate enough.

You could try some of the non-chain smaller menswear stores on the main street in your neighborhood. Depending on the neighborhood, I've seen suits for $100.

Always had good luck at SIMS in lower Manhattan. R to Rector.

SYMS or Century 21 in Manhattan (both 2 blocks from each other)

I like H&M's suits for that price range. They're pretty stylish but you have to be kind of tall and skinny...

My husband found a nice suite at Burlington last year for about $150. We also have purchased a plain black suit at Men's Warehouse for $300 (I believe). They do have a small selection of less expensive suits, you just have to ask. But I would check out Burlington first, they also do alterations there and it is a fair price.

The Wearhouse was good for me, too. They have sort of ridiculous sales -- maybe ask if they know of one coming up. This might not work for your cause, but just by way of example I got two suits for the price of one (including a tux) -- and that came in just over $300!

Alternatively, and it just depends what kind of quality you're looking for, but I once bought a totally serviceable, presentable suit at Target for dirt cheap. Target price + a trip to the dry cleaner/tailor = bargain. A friend of mine only owns Target suits and you'd never know. Good luck!

I like Mens Wearhouse and have bought several suits there. My only caution is that the guys there are very good at showing you things you'll look good in, I always end up spending more than I intended.

Ok, this is probably going to sound super cheap, but I own it. My boyfriend is an editor and has never seen a suit or a dollar in his life. For my baby sister's 500 guest southern wedding (she had 26 bridesmaids/groomsmen), we got my boyfriend a suit at TARGET. It is actually kind of awesome, with a nice lining and sleek lines and, between it and my hella ruffley bridesmaid's dress, we were able to fake out my entire extended family and pretend we have more than a 600 sq foot closet full of street furniture and crazy mutts. Just sayin'--don't rule Target out. http://www.target.com/Blazers-Suit-Jackets-Clothing-Men/b/ref=nav_t_spc_2_16/187-3524690-1417013?ie=UTF8&node=15399261

This sounds odd, but walk up and down 5th avenue in the city and go to the random guys handing out handbills for non-descript suit shops in the area. I have bought two suits this way that were designer brands from last year's lines. Very good prices.

I think there's almost always someone passing out those kinds of flyers around 59th and Lex. No idea how nice the stuff is, but at least it's a specific location.

I did read recently that if a guy is going to buy just one suit it should be navy. Just saying.

thanks everyone again... we found a Ralph Lauren suit that retails for about $400 for $150 at Burlington in the city. They are doing the tailoring on site. Oh, we choose a tan color since it's for a spring/summer wedding.
