moving to bedford between st johns and lincoln...safety?

Hi!

My roommates and I may move to an apartment on bedford between st johns and lincoln. We loved the area during the day but are unsure of what it is like at night...is it safe? should we be worried? someone told me the franklin stop off the 2-3-4-5 is not a very safe area...does anyone know about this? let us know because it could really help us decide! thanks so much!

I live in that area of Franklin and it's fine. Walk that way during the day and you'll see for yourself. Summertime at night , it's just a bunch of guys standing around talking or whatever and they don't bother anyone.

I'm curious who "someone" is. It's so easy to "dis" another n'hood with nothing to back you up but some random crime story or hearsay based on hearsay. Did "someone" give you any specifics?

the someone is a friend who lives in the neighborhood! she was just giving me pro's and cons, that was a con...another friend of hers who lived in that neighborhood a while ago had given her that info...

There are a several threads about the safety of the area if you poke around a bit. That being said - the neighborhood is awesome as long as you don't do stupid shit. Walk around drunk at 4am with an ipod hanging out and you won't have it or your wallet by the time you get home...

i've lived here for a few years and only been approached once in a way that made me uncomfortable or nervous. just be smart - but i think it's the same in most parts of NYC at this point. just m.y.o.b. and go home.

I think it takes some getting used to. I moved to Park Place and Nostrand from Park Slope 7 years ago. It was quite a shock frankly, but now I'm largely used to the typical street scene around here. Your location is much more "normal" than this, so your transition should be a lot easier. In any case, I survived and am surviving (knock on wood).

And totally glad I made the move. My life is much more interesting and much different that it would have been had I stayed in the Slope.

that's a really quiet block, save for the noise/traffic from the car wash on EP. Bedford north of EP keeps looking better and better.

Pay no attention to the fact that a man was shot and killed on the street just one block north of that a few months ago. Drug dealer vs. drug dealer. The vic lived on the block and had a very large business that was run out of this basement.

One side states: Crime that involves only criminals (and/or drug addicts-intoxicated gentrifiers) as "victims" should not be the concern of most gentifiers. The criminals usually only hit only their target.

The other side states: Crime affects gentrifiers, even if they are not the intended targets. Criminals are bad shots, and rarely get to practice at the range. Criminals rob people who are not criminals.

Agreed.

That having been said, I wouldn't worry about it. I live on Eastern parkway near Classon and I gnerally feel comfortable, day or night.

My wife and I, and now our nearly-three-year-old, have been in your immediate vicinity for numerous years. Don't let paraderest scare you.
