So I subscribe to a weekly arts newsletter and today the newsletter came with this graphic at the top. It looks like the woman is trying to get away (hence, her lost shoe behind her) and the man is about to grab her hair. (Also, is that a whip hanging from his pocket?) WTF??

Is this a newsletter that is sent via email for free, but that suggests donations?

    Just curious.

No, they have high-end advertisers. No donations requested that I'm aware of.

That looks like a dude riding his lady.

She looks to be enjoying it.

I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder. To me, she looks to be trying to get away from him as fast as possible (lost shoe, arm raised to move forward to get away from the guy, legs in a position that show she's obviously still in motion) and her face is either neutral or negative not one of ecstasy.

I guess it's always good to get different opinions about "art".

ah i see, i didnt think escape because of the look on her face. they could have added detail to it to bring out a different feel, but i guess they left it up to us.
maybe it is a whip and he had to wrestle her to the ground and thats why he shoe fell off,and shes "had it before" that explains the boring face

    it is odd.

I think the strap is his loose suspender. Looks like an intoxicated game night or something. I probably wouldn't frame it and put it on my wall, but for a newsletter, who cares I guess :)

    Ha! Good one, Ana.

Opossum - I hadn't thought that was a suspender. You're probably right. You ask who cares - I care because there are so many images of violence against women (and oftentimes mixed with sexual imagery, such as here) and I really don't need to be getting in in my in box.

I emailed the "newsletter people". They said it's 2 characters from Mad Men and they actually had a meeting at their company to discuss whether the graphic would be considered offensive. So, I guess they knew there was that chance.

Danielle, my reaction is the same as yours: to me it looks like a rape in progress... not cool.

Um, she's wearing a nightie with built in garter and thigh highs, and his shirt is undone. This just looks like consensual sex play to me.

Um..she's not wearing a nightie. She wearing a bra and panties -hence, the nude color (her skin!) between the bra and the panties. Also, the fact that she's wearing garters does not mean the sex is consensual. Visual imagery of violence/sexual assaults against women often have the women wearing what many would consider "provocative" clothing (I guess because some men get off on that violent imagery).

I think if they wanted us to think it was consensual sex play they would have left a bigger clue - like an open mouth or an obvious facial expression that she is enjoying herself. They also would not have drawn attention to the shoe she lost, which takes up almost half of the graphic.
