kombucha question

Hello all,

I’ve been living in Park Slope for just over two years. This site comes highly recommended.

My question to you all is as follows: what do you think of kombucha tea?

I have been giving serious thought to brewing and selling my own brand of kombucha tea. Given the state of the economy, my love for kombucha, and my desire to bring this wonderful drink to more members of this community I figure why not.

My tea is wonderful: dry, stronger than you can buy from the shelf, 100% organic, and, well, raw.

I would think I could easily produce, bottle, and sell for prices close to 50% less than what you can get in stores. Also, I would only used recycled/refused bottles and deliver to your house on foot (or you can come to me).

What does everyone think? Great small biz idea or waste of time?

i am so disgusted by kombucha. Thats my opinion.

I actually like the stuff but finding the ultmate in Kombucha tea is of no interest to me so I would have little interest in what you are offering. Don't be discouraged. This is just my one little opinion.

It's so funny but I just finished a bottle of the stuff, and was just telling a friend how pricey it is. I really enjoy it, and would LOVE to buy some that was at a much cheaper price than the stores ($3.99 is the lowest I've seen at the grocery store near me).

I'd be interested in purchasing some if you get it up and running in the future.

It's one of those things that cures...you know...everything.

I think the stuff is digusting, but I indulge in a $3.99 bottle per day! I'll be a customer. I seriously see and feel the effects.

What effects to you see/feel. Just curious.

My roommate in Seattle had a kombucha "tank" in our kitchen. I have a general aversion to fungi/mushrooms so I could never bring myself to like the stuff. It was *ok* but conceptually too much for me.

I would agree with BrooklynJack in that you may run afoul of some Health Dept issues w/o some initial research. Maybe potential issues of liability as well? Sorry, you may have already thought of all this stuff, but I'm just putting it out there.

Never had the stuff, but I generally say if it feels good - do it.

One of my older kids made their own kombucha for about a year. We had specimens in the freezer and had babies and did all the right things. Special equipment, special pots, etc. etc. They drank it for the longest time as did i and neither of us ever saw a difference in anything in our lives. JMO of course.

Ok, update time. Operation "renegade kombucha" is a go. I've brewed a bunch of batches since the posting and I think I'm ready...

Ok, I'm not actually ready, but I'd like some feedback from real kombucha drinkers and I'd like to start establishing some initial momentum.

I have a limited yet ample amount of tea. It's good. I propose the following: PM or post feedback here. Please shoot me for being cheesy, but I'd like to set up a "stand" or sorts - probably under the guise of a stoops sale and invite people to come by, and get some tea.

Give me an idea of how much you want, how much you want to donate (yeah, it's like that), and when... I'm thinking Sat/Sun 2pm, 3pm, 4pm...

Oh, and I have to say I love the stuff....I've been drinking kinda a lot - I wake up kinda craving it.

Thoughts?

My personal thought is I would never buy something like this from a stranger making it in their home. But, that is me.

Yeah, i agree with LongTimeSloper. If I knew you, that's a different story, but to buy some from a stranger takes word of mouth. It takes trust.

My suggestion, sell it to your friends, tell your friends to tell their friends. Build it from there. Something like this needs to start via word of mouth and not under the guise of a stoop sale.

i love kombucha like you wouldn't believe, but i agree with the two previous comments...it's not something i want to buy from a stranger...
