Subject: I'm new to NY looking for nice Jazz spots

Hello everyone, I'm wondering if you all can assist. My husband and I are new to NY, and we live in CH. Its his 30th birthday, we don't know anyone here, and I would like to take him to a nice jazz resturant. If we need to go to the city that's fine too. Let me know your favorite spots.

He also likes Hip Hop (Mos Def, Common, Jill Scott, Kindred, etc) so if you know of any concerts that would work too.

I just need suggestions for us to go out....His birthday is 3/17.

Thank you so much.

Check out the BAM Cafe - The food is just ok, but they book some really innovative music and the space is terrific. www.bam.org

There are a handfull of jazz spots in Brooklyn. Admittedly, I haven't seen a jazz show in about a year, so I can't vouch for any of these places:

    Sistas Place
    456 Nostrand Avenue
    718-398-1766

    Jazz Spot
    375 Kosciuszko Street
    718-453-7825

    Parlor Jazz
    119 Vanderbilt Avenue

There's also Puppets Jazz bar on 5th Avenue, in Park Slope. This week's Brooklyn Courier Life had a review of it. They don't serve food, but that stretch of Park Slope offers a ton of pre-show dining options.

One place that I can vouch for is Dizzy's Club at Columbus Circle in Manhattan. World-class entertainment and decent food.

Barbes on 9th St at Sixth Ave in Park Slope is another excellent jazz/music place you'll want to check out.

No food, but there *is* a website and an excellent friendly vibe

If I may be so bold -- I'm a Fort Greene Jazz musician with 2 upcoming shows in the area -- I think you'd enjoy this band.

March 25th -- 8:30 PM at Tillies, a great coffee shop on Vanderbilt Ave and Dekalb ave with lots of great dining options.

April 2 at Moe's, 8:00 PM, corner of Lafayette and S. Portland -- fantastic neighborhood bar, also lots of great restaurants on Fulton St.
