Fireworks?????

Did someone set off their stash 3 weeks early? Was this something for one of the cruise ships? Something to do with Empire State Park?
If anyone has a link that explains WHAT the heck all those fireworks that just went off were being set off for, I would greatly appreciate reading about it!

I know! I thought those were being set off in my own backyard until I heard from a friend all the way over at the Manhattan Bridge commenting on the noise!
