There is also Tekserve which is in Manhattan. They are meant to be quite good, though i haven't used them personally.

tekserve is iffy on ipods. when i went because of ipod issues--ipod not working--they sent me to the apple store. whivh meant needing an appointment, having to come another day, etc

Best bet if you are a night owl is to make a late night appointment at the midtown (5th Ave) Apple Store. You can breeze in and out in no time. Soho is definitely a wait and is really only convenient during the day if you are close to the area.

My experience with the iPod store isn't that they do much fixing of iPods. The techs say upfront that they don't have any tools. They tell you if the problem can be fixed by doing a hard reset of the thing, or if the batteries need replacing. Otherwise, you're buying a new one (but you can get a discount, and free recycling of your old unit if a tech pronounces it dead at the scene.)

I recently dropped my iPod and dinged a corner in just the right way so that the charging plug wouldn't fit. The iPod tech told me that I was looking at a new unit. Unconvinced by that, and unwilling to spend $150, I took a pair of pliers and was able to fix the thing at home, by myself, for free.
