Where to buy paint?

I'll be moving in a few weeks, and we're going to be painting the new apartment. Does anyone have a suggestion of where to buy paint and painting supplies (brushes, rollers, etc) in Park Slope? Are the hardware stores on 7th and 5th worth a shot, or should I suck it up and go to the Lowes in Gowanus?

Leopoldi's on 5th (between 7/8th sts) has what you need. It's cluttered but they have great customer service.

When I did the whole place including floors and woodwork, I got a ride to Paints by George on MacDonald Ave at Church (it's by an F train stop)

Very good prices on Benjamin Moore paint, seriously knowledgable staff that can discuss wood stripping and sealing. They are open contractor's hours -- which means open EARLY, close early.

Leopoldi's (5th Ave, 7th St) and Pintchik's on Bergen/Flatbush are both fine too. I don't like the crap paint that is Martha Stewart or Ralph Lauren or Behr's, so Home Despot/Lowe's is not my first choice.

Forget Lowe's and Home Depot, they only sell their own house brands. Best paint I ever used was Benjamin Moore paints. A professional painter clued me in on this. George on MacDonald sells Benjamin Moore. He's only open till 2 or 3 but he's open very early. You might check with Tarzian on 7th also Pinters? (I think on Flatbush near Dean St). Sid's on Jay Street has BM . . . really very good paint. Costs a little more but goes on fast and easy and is quite durable for years. Use primer beforehand.

I agree with going to Tarzian. It's on the corner of 7th Ave. and 2nd St.

The staff was great. I didn't have to wait around forever to be helped. Got what I needed and got out.

They also carry Benjamin Moore paint. It's about 40 bucks a gallon.

I just finished painting. I use Home Depot's Behr paint. I think it's more long lasting than Moore paints. But the Moore paints have more colors.

I'd say stick to the big places like Home Depot or Lowes (lowes also carries Mathra Stewart paints that have absolutely lovely colors) then you can get more selection of rollers, extendo-rollers, brushes etc.

The little hardware store on 10th Ave/Prospect Ave carries Benjamin Moore - they also have a warehouse across the street to stock the cans. They sell little sample jars as well

I love the idea of little sample jars.. sometimes you can't tell till it is on the wall and dries if it is a color you want to live with.

Problem with the little samples is that they are only available in a limited number of colors

I would try Pintchik. They have a slew of sample jars for brands like Benjamin Moore and Pratt & Lambert, etc, and they'll mix custom colors for you. I like Pratt & Lambert better than Benjamin Moore. I think P&L has richer colors is hardier. The only thing I like better than P&L is milk paint. You might want to try Abbot's Paint/Hardwarein Sunset Park as well.

I managed buildings till the early 90's and became acquainted withthis company when I was buying enough paint to paint hallways in a 3,000 unit building. I got the same courtesy and good prices as a private customer as I did when I was in the industry.

I'll second or third or fourth Tarzian - they carry the low VOC Benjamin Moore, which is supposedly much easier on the environment (I dig it because it's very low odor - a plus when weather keeps you from opening up all of the windows).

I would always, always go with alocal hardware store over Lowe's or Home Depot! The guys at Leopoldi on 5th Avenue are great and they sell Benjamin Moore paints.
