Does anyone know of a place where one can rent a cabin for a weekend in a secluded area not too far from nyc?

    Dexter?

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say the Poconos. Not sure if that is too far for you.

this looks great. Is it available this weekend?? (couldn't tell from the post whether there is an (a) and (b) option or not).

I just did a Google search for "Poconos + cabin" and that Craigslist listing is one of the first results that came up. You would have to contact them directly.

    Have fun!

    www.vrbo.com is a good resource.

I used it to rent a cabin in the Adirondacks last year. I recommend the Catskills though. Much closer.

That new show Toni on NY has an episode on stuff to do and eat in the Catskills this weekend. According to the TW schedule on screen, it's Ch. 11 Saturday evening.

I'm a fan of the Catskills.

Phoenicia is right on a bus line so you don't need a car. Tons of rentals there. If you have a car, there are places (affordable) all over the Catskills - my favorite part is up by Tannersville area - so pretty.

Craigslist has it's own section for the region. And as Boygabriel says - www.vrbo.com is a good resource.

I stayed once at www.lazymeadow.com and it's fun (owned by Kate Pierson from the B52s. I stayed at the main place, but she's got these remote rustic cabins too that look nice too.

Do people still rent out their bungalows in the Rockaways?

I have never been here, but I know the area a teeny bit from relatives, plus there's a farmer at the farmers market from the area. (Hey a thought-they might have some tips.) I couldn't help sharing because I bet there's at least one member of the this board who will appreciate this picture. (New Paltz/Rosendale maybe 90 miles from Brooklyn)

vrbo looks like a great resource.

Any rec's on which areas to choose and why? Close to a town with good food, close to good flat or steep trails, close to water, close to good skiiing (downhill or x-country)? The options are overwhelming so I need help narrowing it down if we go!
