Our house (Willoughby between Clinton and Washington) was burgled last Saturday nite between 9:30 and 10:00 pm or thereabouts.

They came in thru the fire escape and the window and took off with two laptops, an external hard drive, an Ipod, two office bags and 4 cans full of change.

Funnily they didnt take any of the other stuff....watches etc that were next to the Ipod.

Even for the laptops, they took the laptops and power supply but left the mouse.

The cops came and did their stuff. Nothing much out of it.

We came to the house and on trying to open the door found that the security chain was on from the inside. My wife freaked out and ran down. The burglars had put the chain in place so we wouldnt walk in on them.

Sadly....and our mistake....we hadnt closed the grille at the window. We have been living in the same apt for 5.5 years and kinda got too comfortable.

The NYPD detectives told us that there is a rise in housebreaks. And then we found out today that an apartment, five houses down was broken into the next night after ours.

Also a friend's apartment mate was mugged by two people at 11 pm on Clinton between Dekalb and Lafayette last night.

Whats with this spate of increase in crime ?

The economy is in the toilets and some people have too much time in their hands ...

My place was robed as well. there is a simple solution. renters insurance. it will cost $100 per year and last time i got robed they paid me $3000 for lost and stolen items.

And make sure to keep those windows closed. there is a good chance they will be back since they had an easy time with your place.

    Which renters insurance is that?

    Thanks

Allstate sells renter's insurance. It also covers accidents or injuries suffered by visitors. They seem to care about your building construction materials, oddly enough.

    There's a $500 deductible, so it's essentially only for a significant loss.

    And here is more.

Looks like a full-blown crime breakout.
