best way to get an eye exam cheap contacts

people people people, need your best internet suggestions for this one. The wife & I have been unemployed since October. Thankfully, she's been freelancing for a month & we've finally got some cash to take care of some things, eye care being one of them.

What do you think would be the most affordable way to get our eyes checked & get some new contacts. Maybe a local doc that will cut us a discount since we're sans insurance? Any online places you'd recommend?
