it is just my browser? suddenly most of the site is sans-serif (and hard to read, imo).

It's a horrible font for this type of forum. Not sure who in their right mind would think otherwise.

serifs guide the eye and make fast reading easier. it ain't ostentation to do a job well.

...although now i'm forgetting if the old font had serifs. did it? (i feel like i've forgotten my mother's face!)

I thought the old font didn't have serifs but wasn't as condensed/narrow as this one is. More like how the menu appears here - http://web.archive.org/web/20080108060325rn_2/www.brooklynian.com/forums/

But I might be remembering wrong.

I think the PC people might be seeing something else. Have you tried resetting your View or Zoom?

The time might be off due to your profile settings. Go into profile and look at the Timezone: should be set at GMT -4 hours.

I went to an art cocktail party they had a couple of months ago in a few of the empty condos they have for sale. The condos are gorgeous and the views magnificant. However, my friend noticed that the windows in one of the condos for sale that faces the BQE and is level with it had bulletholes in them. (I guess people shooting from their cars.) Scary.

We never have had serifs. The new font is Helvetica and lots of forums 'in their right mind' use it. IMO it's 10x better than verdana, the former font. I can see if there is a Helvetica font that is more 'readable' but I find the current font easier to read frankly. Willing to look at other fonts if you want to recommend, but there is a very limited palette of web-safe fonts (those which any browser can display ).

You may need to adjust your font size just one size up if you think it's too narrow. Depends on screens and preferences, just an assumption.

I have Firefox set to display all pages using Futura.

I know web designer hate people like me, but I just prefer it.

i've tried. it's a proportion thing. i just find this much harder to read quickly than the former font. but whatever. i will try not to make a federal case of it.

ETA: i find helvetica very pretty and therefore nice for titles and such. i just have issues with it as body-text. but you cannot please all of the people very much of the time at all.

i stand corrected about the serifs. well, really i sort of slouch corrected.

    +1
I think it looks great on the menus and user names and stuff, but I feel like I can't skim posts as quickly as I could before.

hey, I did some poking around. I can actually make this a user preference. in other words, default to Helvetica, the best font (lollllz) and you can change user preferences using a cookie. stay tuned....

i saw that movie in a theater (there were three other people there, and one fell asleep), and it only made me hate helvetica more. every time i see it i narrow my eyes and grumble. it has become my newman.

Don't look now, Carny and DH, but...uh...

After 50 years of the iconic Futura typeface, IKEA has made a switch to… Verdana?
