For train, you could take the subway to Penn Station, then NJ Transit to Princeton.

There's no way to get there directly, Burns. Gotta go to Penn for the train or the Port Authority for a bus. I've been telling my friends for years that you could make a killing running a Chinatown bus direct to Princeton (NJT is always packed). If anybody's got a spare bus, I'm willing to drive it.

A quicker way (though perhaps about $3 more expensive:

Take the 2/3 to Fulton. Get off and walk two blocks east to the PATH stattion. Take PATH to Newark Penn Station (not NY Penn Station). Then take the NJT train from Newark Penn to Princeton.

I know that might not sound all that faster, but you cut out the extra travel uptown to NY Penn Station , then a stop at Seacaus on the NJT train.

I have to do this trip for work about twice a month. It shaves significant time off the train.

Lo Kee, I used to live in the UES and would go to Penn Station to get to South Orange, NJ. I haven't gone since I moved to Brooklyn... how much time is "significant time" saved by taking the PATH?
