This was news to me. Was anyone else aware that they are building an 80,000 seat NASCAR stadium in Staten Island?

I think I remember reading something about that in the NYT a few weeks ago (maybe Metro section).

I heard about it, the whole take a ferry to the race seems moronic. Somehow I dont see NASCAR fans taking public transportation over their own cars. As long as I'm not paying for it I have no problem watching the whole project fail, or am I?

I'd imagine there'd be more traffic coming in over the Goethals bridge from Jersey than from NY (right, FLUTE?).

I also hope we're not paying for it.

You could invent trees that grow money and plant them in the FK landfill and I still wouldnt go to Staten Island.

    Yucky. :x

It IS a little weird and a tad creepy, I have to admit.

I posted it only for informational purposes since the subject of Staten Island happened to come up. I think not too many people are aware that these plans are going forth, at least in the preliminary stages.

I also wonder if the sub-context of the whole thing (other than re-claiming the landfill and finding environmentally beneficial uses for it --- which admittedly is a good gesture) was as another potential site for NYC2012 events. Just pondering on that, as I certainly am NOT privy to any insider information on that subject.
