I'm having a really strong craving for udon soup. Can I get this around here from a restaurant? Looking for take out.

I can second Gen. 659 Washington Ave
(between Bergen St & St Marks Ave)

The owner is actually japanese which isn't as common as one would think regarding japanese restaurants. They serve traditional homestyle japanese dishes as well as sushi/sashimi.

Taro (on Dean off of Flatbush) also has it.

Gen is closed. For good or just on Mondays? So getting Thai next door.

    I'll try again next time!

Taro is okay but it's a sushi joint mostly, as opposed to a place serving japanese cuisine like Gen.

Good to hear as that's exactly what I wanted.

As udon is a traditional Japanese dish and Taro is a sushi joint it's safe to say that the udon at Gen is way better than Taro's. Sushi is a fad here, and only eaten on special occasions in Japan. My friend used to waitress at Taro and I love the place but it's not a place to go for udon, or any other homestyle Japanese dishes. Taro is a great tapas/fusion restaurant. Gen is a place to go for Japanese food, including udon.

Have you actually tried it at Taro?

i've had both taro's and gen's, and while in principle i agree that gen is the better place for non-sushi food (and that taro is better for sushi), i prefer taro's tempura udon.
