Did anybody hear that?

Did anyone hear what sounded like an explosion tonight, at about 1:30 in the morning (the night of the 29th, morning of the 30th)? It sounded like it happened around 8th Ave and 16th St. I'm on 7th Ave and definitely heard something that was substantial enough to set off car alarms...

Anyone have any info?

I heard a large number of emergency vehicles going somewhere. It sounded more serious than a "normal" FDNY response, but I couldn't tell where they were going.

I guess it was no big deal... I almost feel silly for even starting a thread about it, but it was definitely jarring. I heard the emergency vehicles also - couldn't tell if they were FD or PD, but I did hear the sirens shortly after it happened... Oh well...

Gothamist's map doesn't show anything for us, (though there was a homicide in PH)

Think that's a mapping error...the description says Howard Ave & Sutter Ave, which is in Brownsville.

For what it is worth, I heard it, too - more north on 6th Ave.

I'm on 7th and 14th and I heard it (scarred the sh** outta me).
Yet I dozed right off without any worries.

I heard the fire trucks, but not the bang. We still don't know what it is/was?

I'm hearing helicopters around 10th St this morning, as I did yesterday morning. What's going on?

So, after asking around, this is what I came up with: apparently, a garbage truck had run over a big piece of metal that had been lying in the middle of the road, which blew out its two rear tires. Also, I guess, some garbage truck tires have some tubing in them that contains some sort of compressed air or compressed gas, and the boom was a combination of both the tires and the tubing blowing out... This is like fifth hand info, but it sounds like it could be legit...
