Sodastream carbonator refills?

Is there a place nearby (aside from the co-op) which can exchange the Sodastream carbonators http://www.sodastreamusa.com/catalog/6?
A friend of mine mentioned something on Hoyt and Atlantic but couldn't remember the details. Anyone...?

Are you thinking of the restaurant supply place on Atlantic and Hoyt? I think its is next to the garden.

There used to be a place in Dyker Heights "something" syrups (Royal?)

We've only ever exchanged them via the sodastream web site. They deliver the new ones and pick up the used - you can even leave them at the door and they'll just take them. I never even knew that stores carried these. Are the prices the same?

I live on busy 5th Avenue and don't trust the carbonators to still be there when I come home so I have them delivered to my office. Which is a problem as well because they require a personal exchange so I actually have to go down to meet the delivery guy because he won't waste the time to cut through our security process. More than once I had to be called out of meetings for this.

Anyway, bottom line is I'd rather have direct control over when I can get them replaced and a quick walk down to Atlantic sounds like a good plan.

Wow, I just went to Tarzian West on 7th Avenue and they wanted $24.99 for a 60l carbonator - and they generously offered a $5 rebate because I brought the old carbonator with me ("You get a new one, not a refill" - Duh!).
The normal price is $14.99. Jesus. The woman even argued with me - apparently shipping on online sites would be $8 for each carbonator. Umm, hell no.

Brooke's Appliances (also on 7th) has them for $16.99. That's more like it.

A cook's companion is still the cheapest - $14.99.

Just build your own system, get a 20 lb tank from red hook and you are all set.

If you have the soda stream system that can take the larger tank (110 carbonator), you can also get them from Brooke's. It cost me $66 for 2 after tax.

if you're in the city, any Williams-Sonoma has them. I exchange mine there all the time. It's $16 for the 60L carbonator with the trade in of the old cannister.

There's a store in the city called Basics Plus. I think they have stores all over town. I always went to the one on 45th & 2nd on my way to work. They have all the sizes and are never out of stock. It's $14.99 for the 60L and I just started ordering them from their website... I think it's www.basicsplus.com. They have same day delivery ($2.99 below $50/ free above $50), but you can only order them on their website when you want it delivered in Manhattan!

I considered a sodastream for awhile, but then saw it would take years to actually save money over buying seltzer from the store.

Then I was going to build my own carbonator like in this youtube vid:

But I don't have a car and have no idea how or where I'd get the CO2 canister refilled so 2 years later and I'm still buying from the store.

If you are a true seltzer nut like myself, you drink it all day long. Before my glorious sodastream, I was drinking 2-3 vintage brand bottles a day. While they're pretty cheap (around $0.80, cheapest) carrying one around for a few hours will make it go flat by the 4-5th open. I treat it like a waterbottle and throw it in my purse, so its flat and pretty gross within an hour or so. The sodastream has a better re-usable bottle that keeps the it carbonated longer, AND it allows you to make it super fizzy. With the sodasteam, I can make a bottle last till the end and still be fizzy (maybe 10 openings later.)

This sounds super trivial but I don't drink soda or buy juice or anything so the $15 every 3 weeks for a refill honestly feels like a good deal when I'm enjoying it much more than other brands, and i drink 3 a day.

Just a thought from a fateful sodastream customer
