Christies is moving

Whatever you think about their patties, we will now be able to claim them officially as part of Prospect Heights. I walked by today and there's a sign saying they're moving to 287 Flatbush (previouslu known as J.J.'s Place--on the block with New Prospect). Hopefully this will result in some increased foot traffic for New Prospect, which has decreased its hours of late.

The rent for their old spot must have been astronomical.

oh! oh! I knew this! I was going to post this!

Also, the wine store next to JJ's place/Christie's new place is going to expand into the vacant storefront next to it.

that's actually a good thing as far as i'm concerned -- now their highly addictive patties aren't physically standing between me and the gym. (psychologically, now that's another matter.)

on that note -- would anyone dare to venture a guess on the calorie/fat content of those patties? (been curious for a while about how much damage they do.)

I'm NOT a fan of their patties, partly because there are big chunks of fat in them. so grody. in terms of health - I'd equate them to a whopper or big mac.

Agreed. The crust is greasy without being especially tasty, and the inside is way too soupy for my tastes (at least for the beef patty). I tried the chicken patty recommended by some on this board, and although it wasn't as liquidy as the beef, it still tasted really artificial- like there was some kind of filler mixed in with the chicken.

It's not so much that I like their beef patty (I prefer Little Miss Muffin's curry chicken for my near-the-subway snack), I just really like their coco bread and find that the patty is a good condiment.

They make more sense as a condiment.

My guess for the chicken patty has always been about 400-450 calories and maybe 15 grams of fat. Yes, I'm one of those calorie-counting psychos...

So... what IS a beef patty supposed to be like?! I, too, prefer the chicken patties at Christies, but I do the beef every once in a while for variety (never noticed chunks of fat :? ) and they're FAR better than the one that I had at 3Ds. That one was horrid. Bland and the beef mixture was finely ground to the consistency of toothpaste... and it seemed like it had been sitting around for a while... Did I just get a bad one? I know that some DHers swear by 3Ds...

well, either you got a bad one, or you like soupy/greasy/fatty patties better? I love 3Ds. the patties are so yummy, esp. the spicy beef. and their veggie patty is also fantastic. I tried christies a few times and every time was so disgusted I couldn't finish the patty. but, bear in mind, I have a massive issues with fat chunks - yuck. I know some people can ignore that. I can't.

I have been hopelessly in love with their veggie patties for years. I think they feel the same way about me.

Christies patties are awesome. They are homemade, so sometimes I do find them a little soupy inside, or otherwise inconsistent. However, all in all, their patty/coco bread combo is unbeatable. I been eating two per day for the last 3 months, and I feel better than ever!

Ever been to that "carribean food" place on 7th Ave?? Yuk.

a patty should be able to stand up on it's own. the coco bread is secondary. that's for folks who need a "meal" or more carbs than already included. a patty by itself is a meal. no, I'm not kidding. a nice, spicy beef, for instance, should keep a normal human being satisfied (as in not suffering from hunger pangs) for 3-4 hours. christies was so grotestque I couldn't finish the patty. I also tried their chicken and their veg, and both were too... disgusting. while I may be a carnivore, the picture of oodles of fat being distributed to make other patties more 'delicious' makes me want to vomit. I can't eat christies, at all. 3Ds, tho, is awesome. and, of course, while they're not house-made, I love the miss.muffin patties.

No, I'm not a big fan of fat chunks, but I've never noticed any in a Christie's patty... now melted fat... THAT, I don't mind so much! :D I mean, I DID order a plate of bacon at Festivus...
Really though- when you make burgers, or something, you can't get the really lean stuff! There's no flavor! You at least have to cut it with some chuck or somethin'...
So there is a chance that I got a bad one from 3Ds? Okay, okay- I'll try 'em one more time!

3Ds isn't lean, for sure! it's just delicious without being outrageously fatty. :)

    Subject: Christies

When Christies's veggie patties are good, they're really good. But twice I've had them full of sand/grit, which made me wonder about whether those greens didn't get washed--a suspicion amplified by the roaches that've been on the wall more than once. Great, but sometimes risky.

It's the fat in the patties that give 'em the flavor. I love Christies. Nothing like a beef paty between cocobread and a slice of proccessed cheese finished off with their coconut bun.

    *shudder*

I like things that don't need 25 layers of sponge to be fully consumed.

I'm shocked that anyone would not consider these delicious and filling patties to be among the best deals in all of NYC. I mean, home made patties on big dense fresh coco bread for under $3? The chicken patties are quite frankly the best I've ever had, and I flippin love Jamaican Patties. And now they'll be a little bit closer to my house, I'm thrilled.

For no particular reason, I hadn't had a patty in a couple years (last one was @ Christie's before the move). The craving finally hit a couple weeks ago, so I got a spicy beef from Christie's. Not what I remembered of Christie's--the crust was almost like dry bread. Any bit that did not contain filling was tasteless. The beef had a nice flavor, though.

Wanting to erase that memory, only one week later I went to 3Ds on Franklin and got a chicken. Not specific if it was curry or jerk, but it wasn't particularly spicy. Thecrust was delicious, very flaky, exactly what I wanted. Is either the Washington or Franklin shops considered the "main" outpost? or are they independently run? If the quality is the same, I'm very happy/unlucky that there's one on Washington!

Today, again just another week later (bad trend) I went to Little Miss Muffin for the first time. I usually get home too late to go there or take something other than the Q/B. They only had curry chicken or veg left, so I got the curry. Really, really good, very flaky, and filling wasn't quite as pureed as it sometimes is.

I think someone once mentioned here that Little Miss Muffin's does not make their patties though, despite what it says on their menu. Where do they come from?

Love their veggie patties. But only as a treat...
