A pedestrian was hit on Flatbush at 6th Avenue. She is in critical condition at Methodist Hospital. Hope she'll be ok.

I feel bad for the person but newscopters hovering over at 6 AM making a huge racket is just a bit too much!

You know what would really help? If the penalty for hitting a pedestrian in that situation was more than a D.A.T. for failure to yield.

Seriously. Is that the only penalty? That is some bullsh*t.

A state corrections officer on his way to work at Sing Sing prison this morning ran down and killed a Brooklyn woman, police sources said. Damon Padmore, 38, was driving his Ford Expedition northbound on Flatbush Avenue near St. Marks Avenue in Park Slope about 5:20 a.m. when he slammed into Dorthea Wallace, 38. The woman, a manager at the Macy's in downtown Brooklyn, was pronounced dead at Methodist Hospital. Padmore, a correction officer since 1997, was scheduled to work a shift at the prison in Ossining starting at 7 a.m., according to a corrections spokesman. Police sources said Padmore was not drunk, but was arrested for a misdemeanor for driving with a suspended license.

Wow - a little harsh? I think it is ok to be annoyed at news helecopters. Why did they have to be there? Now if pmonk was annoyed by the sounds of ambulance sirens, that would be another matter.

Anyway - the driver should be harshly punished. My guess is he was driving too fast. I drive that way 3-4 times a week and it is hard to see pedestrians sometimes even if you are trying to be careful.

Too bad for the lady. RIP.

Since the topics haven't been consolidated I'll post this here too:

MOD NOTE: UPDATE - bad drivers tangent discussion moved HERE

This has changed nothing. Yesterday I saw 4 cars run that red light on Flatbush. And another one which did a violent U turn through the crosswalk after I had started crossing with dogs, coming within inches of hitting one of my charges.

I chased down the car as it was parking to inform them of Tuesday morning's incident and that their driver's behavior was reckless. They were pretty confrontational at first, saying "find somewhere else to walk your dogs," but calmed down after I pointed out Ms. Wallace's roadside memorial. We parted ways with them apologizing and offering "peace" and "one love" remarks; but I wonder if it will change their future behavior
