Brooklyn Hot Dogs

imageWhenever I'm motoring through the southern Gowanus Region I make it a point to dine el fresco at Brooklyn Hot Dogs. Their chili cheese dog is satisfactorily picante and the secret grilling technique leaves the dog with a crusty skin ready to burst in your mouth. Taking bets on the locals making it to the drawbridge on their bicycles makes the time go all too quickly.
Don't forget to sample the dessert cart. My ding dong was still warm!

I've been by this place a million times. It's in that no man's land between Park Slope and Lowes on 9th street. I don't think I've ever seen it open. Certainly not in the last few years. How old is that photo?

Really? Wow, what time? Is it open for an hour or something? Is this a front or a real hot dog place? I think i'm going to have to go try it out.

I've been there a couple of times. They make decent Sabrettes. Isn't there a sort of new hot dog place on Third Ave around Union? Seats about ten to fifteen?

There was Dawg Shack there, but seems to be shut down last few times I walked by this summer the gate was down. It was OK, really nice owner, but the location and price didn't make me come back.

The gowanus place serves the local industries operating nearby (iron working, glass, and -yes- wood cabinetry).

    It is truly ungentrified.

Dawg Shack was open today and did very well by me when I came running in, starving and late to my next errand, panting, "what's the fastest hot lunch you have?" I ended up with a nice knish -- nothing fancy, but the guy at the counter was super nice and he cut a nice pocket in it to hold onions -- for $2, which was just the ticket for bolting while running up the hill to PS.

    Dawg Shack, I salute you.
