Did you take him in? Does he act domesticated?

What is the cross street where you found him/her? There are several colonies all around there.

What's a cat colony? Are these like secret communities of cats? How do they make it through the winter?

a cat colony is a group of USUALLY but certainly no always feral (non socialized skittish cats and kittens) who hang together in a group. If lucky they have been trapped, neutered and returned where some kind soul feeds and provides boxes for shelter...many cats dont have even that small luxury and die of starvation, illness and exposure. Here in Brooklyn there are people who do what they can from the goodness of their own hearts and their own wallets. Its very sad and the only way to bring an end to it is to have people shut down pet stores, fix all animals and adopt from shelters.

There were five cats outside our building, one momma cat and four kittens, that several people and myself were feeding. They ended up just up and disappearing one day, before it got cold actually. I totally agree with you misssimone, one of my cats is from a shelter and another was a mild mannered stray we took in. I can't believe it when I see a $600 dollar dog in a pet store that someone will buy rather than going in a shelter. I'm hardly a moral authority here, and everyone has the right to do as they please, but it doesn't make sense to me. :-(
