Inexpensive Eyeglasses? Perscription or just lens

I bought an great pair of vintage frames but I don't have insurance so I need to get my prescription lenses put in at a really low cost. Any ideas? I should probably get an eye check-up done, though it's not on the top of my list -unless it is also at a low cost. Hey, times are tough.

try the folks at brooklyn eyeworks on 5th avenue and 14th street.

they are some of the nicest people around, and will do their best to help you on your budget.

best eyeglass place i've ever been in my life.

Cute! When you figure out what to do, let us know. They'll probably want to examine your eyes, and they'll have to measure the distance between your pupils, too.

A little off the beaten path but Dr. Kusnetz on 5th ave right off 58th street.
I found some funky frames and he cut down an existing prescription to fit them for a very small fee. He also tinted my old prescription glasses into sunglasses for like $10.

Go to chinatown. I love the place in the slope, but they are very very overpriced.

I believe so. This question has come up many times and Costco always seems to be involved in the answer(s)

    seriously, check costco.

last year, for $300, i got an exam *and* glasses that would normally have cost $500. even with the membership fee, i saved $$.

Try the optical place in the Pathmark at 12th and 2nd Ave. A friend got a pair of frames with lenses there for around $100. Sweet-ass glasses!

mama, let me know what they charge. i need new glasses, have some vintage frames as well, and would love to redo. (of course, mine are serious bifocals so they'll be a stack more...)

My only worry is that the ornate filigree/leaf design on the frame might need an experienced optician to handle it. I should be getting the frames in the mail next week, I bought them on ebay... woo hoo go EBAY!

globaleyeglasses.com does replacement lenses for like, less than 60 bucks. i can't vouch for the place sense i never use them though. i have gotten frames from online discounters like zennioptical.com and have always been satisfied, if that makes you feel any better.

Yes, My bifocals with AR coat in polycarbonate were about $100 + $18 to create the template to put them in my frames. Membership is $50

Single vision with regular CR39 lenses are probably less

try costco if you have a membership... i just got some glasses there and i got some nice acrylic frames for $60 and fancy coated photochromatic lenses for $160 (or $180?)

the exam was $60 for glasses and $90 for glasses/contacts

i believe the cheapest lenses they offered were ~$60?
