Boerum Hill - kid friendly

Hi, looking at moving to Brooklyn from the UWS and have been focused on Park Slope, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, but just came across Boerum HIll - which is a new neighborhood to us. It looks like the prices are a bit lower - which is good, but I have to wonder why? Any perspectives on if it's a good place for a young family (couple, toddler, and another baby on the way). I guess to us, "family friendly" is what the other neighborhoods we are looking at are (if that helps!). Thanks!

Judging by the number of strollers I see in my neighborhood, Boerum Hill is definitely family-friendly. It's a bit cheaper than PS, CG and CH because it's not as established in terms of gentrification and still a bit rough around the edges (we're at the edge of downtown Brooklyn and then there are the Gowanus projects). Also, perhaps the housing stock is not quite as nice. BH has many lovely brick rowhouses but not as many brownstones as those other nabes. In the 13 years we've been here (we moved from PS), the neighborhood has really taken off, with many new stores and restaurants. I love the neighborhood because it's so convenient (near the Atlantic Avenue transportation hub), close to Manhattan and easily walkable to/from Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill and the North Slope.

BH is a great nabe. It just does not have the great schools like PS 58 in CG , PS 29 CH or 321PS.

OKay, first off, the Gowanus Projects has little bearing on the price. They build luxury condos on Baltic right next to the projects that sold out when most buildings are struggling to sell and they were asking around $600 a sq. foot.

Boerum Hill extends into some industrial/residential mixed blocks that will be cheaper than say livening on Dean St and Hoyt would be. I lived there for 9 years between Gowanus Housing and Wycoff Gardens and never had any problems or ever felt unsafe.

BH is kid friendly but if your kid requires lots of new clothes, special kid haircuts, Louie G's ice cream, and a lot of Thai restaurants, Park slope is the way to go. Oh and Prospect Park is great, too.
