Visiting soon

Just need a bit of info. My late husband grew up at 2nd st & 5th ave and went to school at PS 77 which is now PS 321. I will be visiting NYC soon and was thinking about taking my son by there to see where his Dad grew up.

My questions are: Is it a safe area to be walking around in? Only ask because according to my husband it was the slums in the 40's. But I know that areas do change for the better.

What's the easiest way to get there from NYC?

321's could not be in a better area, no matter the time.
As a female who often walks around park slope alone late at night and into the dawn I always feel safe.

During the times of the day that you'll likely be visiting ('specially with child in tow) I don't think that you're going to have to worry too much about safety. As far as getting there... a cab is quick, but cabbies can be reluctant to take you from Manhattan to Brooklyn. There are several subway lines that'll get you close. The stop 4th Ave and Union is the closest, but it's also a pleasant walk from the 7th Ave (Flatbush) or Bergen stations (also on Flatbush).

I remember him telling me about it being a cold-water flat and that to take a bath they had to go down to the park to get a shower at a bathhouse there. I hope thehouse is still there!

Your husband went to school here in the 40s? How old is he now?

Anyway-Park Slope is a very good, very desirable area of Brooklyn to live in. The 1940s are 60 years away from 2006!

One bedroom apartments go for $425,000 now around here easily. They can't build apartments quick enough, people want to live here so badly.

you would be more than safe here, bring lots of money too if you want to buy anything in any of the shops on 7th avenue )main drag of Park Slope) or, the very hip, stylish 5th Avenue shops either.

And, 321 is an excellent school-rated very highly

nybt, i've never, ever had a single cabbie refuse to take me to brooklyn, especially to park slope. i don't think you'll have any trouble, mary, getting to the slope. just tell any cab driver you want to go to park slope, 7th ave and 2nd street (that's where ps321 is).

it's 100% safe, one of the most desirable, wealthy, and expensive neighborhoods in new york city.

I've had cabbies balk at taking me to brooklyn heights! you've been very lucky!

I do recommend, though, getting in the cab and then telling the cabbie where you're going.

some idiot cabbies still think brooklyn is dangerous. i dont know what decade they live in.

Get in the cab, close the door, and then say where you're going. I've never had a cab driver refuse to take me to Park Slope, though sometimes I can tell they're not all that happy about it -- oh well.

I'd suggest the F train to the 7th ave/Park Slope stop. Then walk from there, it is a GREAT part of the neighborhood and as safe as it gets. Should be a nice walk of about 7 or so short short blocks.

Figuring out the subway system is one of the more gratifying things for tourists to accomplish! I would hate to take that all away from her!

I haven't either, but my wife has. I usually: a) don't tell them where I'm going 'til I'm inside and 2) emphasize that I'm right by GAP. Letting them know that they're not going to stray too far off of Flatbush seems to help...

LOL.. i lie to cab drivers too... I'm like I am right off the bridge near Atlantic Terminal... and I live on the border of CH/PH... but hey whatever gets me home at night!!

My husband (ys, I said late) lived the first 10 years of his life there and then they moved to Ca. My son, only knew his dad for a few short years and I thought that this might be a connection for him. He would have been 60.

I am looking forward to figuring out the subway system and plan on getting lost at least once!

I'm glad that it is now a thriving area. It's so nice when you hear about growth to an area. It sounds like you all live in a great neighborhood.
