Old Laptop disposal

I have a 7+ year old laptop that I am looking to get rid of. I would also like to format the hard drive so that any documents will be rendered useless. Is there a place that will do this for me and take it away (preferably without charging)?

Thanks in advance for your help!

You can reformat your hard drive really easily... I'm sure a google search would give you really simple instructions.

    Then, look at http://www.nyc.gov/html/nycwasteless/html/recycling/electronicsrecycling.shtml

Lots of great resources for recycling, donating, reusing, all sorts of stuff.

This is a great way to destroy the data on your hard drive. It's free and pretty easy to do.

Use dban to erase the hard drive

    The correct URL is http://www.dban.org/

then take it to any Goodwill for Recycling. They will take anything

If you have a drill just put a hole in the drive and toss the lot in the trash. Problem solved. Cost $0.

Yeah, I think the point was NOT to throw it in the trash and perhaps divert a bunch of heavy metals and other nasty things to a more appropriate place.
